World War II Online Blitzkrieg
World War II Online Blitzkrieg is a free-to-play action game set in the Second World War, but Blizzard Entertainment plans to add new features to the game in the future, the developer said today.
"The campaign and the multiplayer battles are going to be massively different from those of other World War II games, and we're taking the time to make sure that when the game's going to be available, we're doing our best to make sure that the community is able to enjoy the game they've always wanted," said John Lagercay, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "One of the major areas of improvement we've made is to make it more accessible for newcomers and more accessible for everyone."
In World War II Online Blitzkrieg, players can choose from 40 different Allied and Allied armies. They can then choose from up to 40 different soldiers. And, as the game is free-to-play, you can also pay real-world money to purchase weapons, equipment, and other in-game items, the developer said. The game will offer a variety of maps and all sorts of different game modes, including capture the flag, king of the hill, and capture the flag.
At the outset of the beta, Blizzard is currently accepting applications for new players to try out Blitzkrieg. Players will have to answer several questions about the game, including their initial experience, character classes, skills, and character creation.
Although the game will be free-to-play, there will be a premium subscription model for gamers to subscribe to. In the short term, Blizzard said it plans to provide a $15 monthly subscription fee. This fee is separate from the game's free-to-play model. Blizzard also said that it will offer both the Blitzkrieg premium and a pro-level subscription for new players.
During the closed beta, players can try out the game's four character classes, each of which has its own skills. Blizzard revealed that there will be 20 different player classes in the game, and each class will have its own unique weapon and unique moves. However, players can't play as a single class during the closed beta.
Blizzard also noted that Blitzkrieg will be a very different game than its previous free-to-play title, as the team is planning to introduce an all-new player class every month, and a new one every five months. Blizzard said that Blitzkrieg will be similar to the "healer" class in other online games.
Blizzard also revealed that it is introducing a new high-definition map, which is called Skirmish. As the name suggests, Skirmish is a popular Battlefield 3 map in which players race to capture flags and defend them from attack by air units, and a new version of Skirmish is designed to be more forgiving.
The next four-week beta begins on Thursday, January 13, and runs through January 16. Those who want to join in on the alpha can do so at Battle.net. Blizzard announced that more than 1,000 Battle.net users have registered for the beta, making the beta the most-played game in Blizzard's history.
Looking further ahead, Blizzard will launch Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, a free expansion pack for the action role-playing game. In addition, Blizzard is releasing a new expansion for the popular PC role-playing game, which will be available later this year. Blizzard is also releasing a Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty HD remaster for the Wii U as well as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
Additionally, Blizzard is working on a Warcraft III expansion pack, as well as a new free-to-play game.
In addition to a free-to-play game, Blizzard is working on a new free-to-play title. The company's new game will be powered by the Battle.net cloud-based technology, as opposed to what's currently available on the market.
The executive vice president of operations and general manager of Blizzard Entertainment, Frank Pearce, said during an earnings call this week that the company would like to "get to the point where we can have a free-to-play game that has the same sort of energy as our free-to-play games. This is going to be an ongoing, continuous process."
There is no word yet on when Blizzard will release an updated free-to-play game. However, Pearce did say that it will be developed for the current generation of consoles and PC, so it may be a year or two before we see an updated free-to-play game from the developer.
"We think there's a good chance that the next generation of consoles will see a new type of free-to-play game with a little bit more to do," Pearce said.
Also during the call, Pearce announced that Blizzard will be pushing the microtransactions model for the upcoming PC and mobile games.
