World Soccer 2002 on the Nintendo GameCube has just arrived in stores.

Developed by Blue Fang, the same company that brought the ISS series to the Xbox, the game is the second game in the World Soccer series on the Xbox and carries the International Championship license. For this year's installment, Super Soccer 2002 has been designed to take advantage of all the features of the console and its GameCube-specific features.

Of course, the game will also be playable on the Nintendo GameCube in its native 1080p resolution. GameCube owners will be able to take advantage of the fast-paced action of the game, but not all of the gameplay modes that were present in the first game will make it to the GameCube version. The computer AI will be a challenge as players will try to pin down effective ball control and beat up opponents. Players will also be able to manually adjust settings for the CPU to set the speed, and they can even send two players over the screen into play. Of course, the Hyper Mode is being tweaked to take advantage of the increased power of the GameCube controller. Finally, Super Soccer 2002 will be compatible with a variety of controllers.

World Soccer 2002

Super Soccer 2002 is a direct sequel to Super Soccer 2002, and it will feature all of the core features found in the original game, like the gameplay mode. In addition, the game will feature more updated graphics than its predecessor, which is very well done. Super Soccer 2002 will have the same visual style and animations that were present in the first game, but will also include more-detailed stadiums and a larger roster of playable characters.

The game will feature an enhanced gameplay system, similar to the one found in Super Soccer 2002. Instead of just taking one shot, players will now be able to make a wider tackle by using the A button. When done right, the A button will create a back wall. You'll have a limited number of kicks per volley, but you'll have an unlimited amount of time to make a catch. Super Soccer 2002 also features new touch-sensitive controls that are very cool. In fact, some of the touch-sensitive controls in the game will be used in certain situations.

In terms of gameplay, Super Soccer 2002 will once again feature a trick system that is much more advanced than the one found in the original Super Soccer game. Instead of merely directing the players around the field, you'll be able to pull off tricks by pressing down on the directional pad, and this will let you perform special trick combinations by pressing the B button. If you can pull off these tricks, you'll even be able to reach behind the opposition's defenders to activate a deke move. Once you've locked on to your opponent and, as you execute this move, you'll see the game's AI that reacts in real time to your moves.

The gameplay is shaping up to be quite different from the previous versions of Super Soccer 2002. The majority of the time, however, the control scheme will be very familiar to anyone who has played the original Super Soccer game. You'll be able to perform quick maneuvers by pressing down on the right analog stick in any direction, and the game's control will also be enhanced by the shoulder buttons for direct kicks and jukes. While you'll move your player by pressing up and down on the left analog stick, you'll be able to perform several of these "button presses" during gameplay. The game's deke moves are an interesting idea that takes some getting used to. You'll have to make sure that your deke is positioned correctly, because if you come up short, you'll be penalized for taking too long. When a deke is initiated by pressing down on the right analog stick, you'll have an opportunity to make sure that you hit it correctly. When you've finished holding the button down, you'll be able to perform a slick kick move that will require you to perform more advanced moves.

In addition to the deke moves, you'll find that most of the game's characters will be able to pull off the finishing moves. As with the other unlockable characters, you'll be able to swap them out during the game by using the appropriate number of unlockable items found in the levels. The collectible items are as follows: a hidden power-up that can let you add superpowers to your character or heal your character, as well as one that gives you temporary invincibility and one that temporarily blinds all enemies. You'll also be able to change costumes between the costumes by holding down the A button and using the L button, which you'll be able to access by pressing up on the D pad.

You'll find that the game's default character models are based on recognizable X-Men characters and will not feature any particularly disturbing alterations. The only two of the available characters we've seen so far have been Wolverine, which has been played by Mark Millar (director of X-Men: First Class, the upcoming The Wolverine), and Nightcrawler, which has been brought in to replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
