Ultimate Spiderman
Ultimate Spiderman will be available on XBLA this summer for 800 Microsoft points (US$8.99).
Ultimate Spider-Man will allow you to play as other classic villains like Scorpion, Green Goblin, Mysterio, Scorpion and more, but without any combat, for those who may prefer more classic Spider-Man gameplay.
There will be two characters in the game, the New York Times journalist/co-owner of Ultimate Spider-man, Miles Morales. Miles and MJ, who will be featured in the game, are the same characters who appeared in the motion picture, and are partners with Dr. Octopus.
“The Amazing Spider-Man game on XBLA will allow us to continue to evolve our already great character and game as we look forward to getting fans into the swing of things and enjoying this fantastic experience,” said Dan DeMatteis, vice president of Activision Worldwide Studios. “Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the best superhero games ever made, and we’re really excited to be bringing it to Xbox Live Arcade.”
While Miles will be taking the lead in the game’s story, Peter Parker will be making his way back to the very top as well.
“Gamers who know the comics, will remember Miles being able to escape prison, and ultimately find his way back to a life in a different way,” said Mark Bagley, executive producer at Gazillion Entertainment. “And it’s going to be a story that’s filled with surprises and surprises, that will leave fans on the edge of their seats, and hopefully keep them engaged and interested.”
As far as gameplay goes, the game will play very similarly to its predecessor, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, featuring all the core combat, all the gadgets and gadgets from the first game, as well as the webswinging and grappling hook.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Mark Bagley. “You can definitely see Miles as he swings and swing around the environments. There’s more to him than just swinging from one building to another.”
A post-credits scene from the game may reveal more of the main cast, but some might be worried that the game may be too derivative of the older Spider-Man games. However, there is still enough going on to make a fan happy.
“In terms of gameplay, it’s more like just ‘go here and here and there and go here and do this, and we’ll play this again and you’ll eventually learn how to web sling and move around and move around.’ It’s not something we have ever done before, and we’re not doing it this time.”
It’s obvious that Miles is more of a Spider-Man game than he is a sidekick. The game was a huge critical and commercial success for developer Insomniac and set the tone for its sequel.
“We wanted to deliver the emotional core of Spider-Man to people, and the story that we wanted to tell with this one was never told as a standalone,” the game’s creative director Bryan Intihar told IGN (opens in new tab). “We wanted to make the story follow an attachment that will give people an emotional connection, but we also wanted to make the gameplay feel different. We never wanted to just copy Peter Parker from Peter Parker’s Spider-Man suit.”
The game’s sales and critical reception have clearly impressed Insomniac Games, as they’ve never been the focus of a PlayStation game before.
The company had the freedom to innovate and innovate with Ratchet and Clank in order to appeal to both new and old fans.
“We took the series in new directions and tried to approach it differently,” Insomniac Games said. “We've never done a game that we've tried to change in order to appeal to a new audience. It's one of the pillars of the Ratchet and Clank franchise. We didn't want to make an entirely new game because we wanted to stay true to what fans love about the series.”
That doesn’t mean that the Ratchet and Clank series has been largely unsuccessful. In fact, it’s been for several years, and all kinds of “gifts” have been made to an unannounced game that’s nearly been in development for years.
It’s hard to argue with just how much effort the Ratchet and Clank series has put into the games since its first entry back in 2002, but it’s not just the games that Insomniac has put in front of the studio that makes the games so compelling.
