Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was released for the PlayStation in 1999. The game was a considerable improvement over its predecessor, with faster frame rates and smoother gameplay. However, it didn't offer enough to entice new players in the series, as you still had to earn some of the game's achievements by playing the story mode. We have a full review of the game from GameSpot later in the year, but in the meantime, check out our new feature, "The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 review."
While the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games were praised for their impressive gameplay, they didn't really capture the minds of millions of players as a whole. The series made a surprising effort to push forward with the next entry, with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, which was released for the PlayStation 3 in 2007. With Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, developer Neversoft is taking a leap forward, implementing many of the elements found in the previous two games, with a story mode that focuses on the story mode and allows you to play as some of the best skateboarding skaters ever created. As you play through the single-player mode, you'll get a chance to play as some of the world's best skaters. Along the way, you'll unlock new areas to skate in. You'll also be able to play as some of the top professional skaters in the world, such as Geoff Rowley and Rich Finger. You'll also have access to many more skaters than ever before, including Tony Hawk himself, Kareem Campbell, and more.
With the game's story mode and online modes, you'll likely want to do some customizing and customizing to get the most out of it. While there will be plenty of options to customize your skater, there are a few new additions that are sure to make the game more interesting. For example, there's the size, weight, and color. If you want a mountain range, you'll get the model from the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 series. The variety is impressive, as well, as you'll find lots of different parts for your skater to collect. The bigger, more refined aspects of the game will be complemented by a more diverse collection of boards.
The gameplay mechanics in the game are pretty simple to pick up. You'll simply skate around one of eight boards and use the left analog stick to move. If you hold down the left trigger, you'll pull off a high-powered kick. The X button will let you grind. The A button will let you grind and kick. If you hold down the A button, you'll perform a variety of grabs that will yield cash for you to use on the various different boards. The trick system is solid, and it offers a nice change of pace from the standard meter-collecting seen in the previous Tony Hawk games. You'll be able to collect cash for upgrades, and the game will offer a healthy collection of different items to collect.
The graphics in the game are coming together pretty well. The skating itself is solid, although it obviously loses some of its charm. The skater models and backgrounds are pretty solid, and they animate well, although they're a bit blocky. The game's frame rate, which manages to keep things from getting too hectic, is a bit inconsistent. While the characters in the game look good, there are a few spots where they have a bit of an edge, but we're not overly impressed with the result. The environments we've seen so far are pretty cool and feature some nice touches that keep them from getting too big or too easy to fall into place.
While the visuals are still coming together, it's looking pretty sharp overall. The combo system offers a nice, fluid feel to the game. You'll see a mix of combo options in the game that are as varied as your favorite combos.
