Ufo Aftershock

Ufo Aftershock was one of the first games that gave us a whole new way to play first-person shooters, and now it looks like it will be giving players the full spectrum of both directions. You'll still be able to do things that you would normally only be able to do on foot, or on a helicopter or in a sniper's scope, and you'll be able to use the same weapons that you use on your enemies.

If you happen to be playing as a mercenary or an engineer, then you'll be able to use a new gadget called a Jetpack that will enable you to use your vehicle for both ground and air combat, though you'll still need to avoid being seen by guards.

Also being added to the mix are new weapons, and they're due to land in the PC version this fall. We'll have a hands-on with the PC version when it's released, but in the meantime, be sure to check out our new screenshots, and read our preview for a full preview.

The game's engine is said to be 20 times faster than the development team expected, though to be more precise, the camera will be much more prone to motion sickness, and the car models will be more detailed than in any other game to date. Also promised is a "new story and sandbox-style" campaign.

The game's multiplayer mode is said to be smaller than the solo mode and will feature leaderboards and tournaments. The mode will include social elements like Twitter and Facebook Gaming, and there will be a "seasonal" progression system.

This isn't the first time EA and BioWare have talked about the possibility of a multiplayer component in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game was unveiled at E3 2005, and released this year on Xbox.

The same can't be said for the single-player side of things, as KOTOR's a role-playing game, but according to lead designer Ian Frazier, the sequel to the original is only "one more thing." He said there were too many characters and too many ways to build a compelling narrative, and it's a goal that ultimately led to a dramatic conclusion that let the developers do some truly spectacular things with the established storytellers. "I think the big benefit to us is that we're able to have [that] going in--to get in the same breath," he said. "There are these characters we haven't seen in a very long time and they're really awesome and different, but that's not the end of it."

Finally, he talked about the game's story. When asked whether the sequel had a new Jedi character, he noted that it was "pretty clear" that the character would be Luke. "We have the actual Jedi Master, so we've really focused on those three characters, as opposed to the previous Jedi character, and the new one, Luke, because you know what he's got, and it's pretty clear that this is going to be the character we really want to bring to the franchise," he said.

Karen also gave the example of the characters you see in the trailer, a droid that she called herself. When asked about the sequel, he told GameSpot that he would consider the sequel to be a part of the Skywalker saga, but he didn't name any of the characters that were there. However, he also revealed that some characters have already been announced. "You know, if you're a Star Wars fan, we'd be open to seeing more of those characters, but they're not going to be at the point where it really makes sense. I don't think there's a rule that you have to have something as specific and relevant in this particular storyline as it is in the original trilogy, but I don't think that's going to happen."

Karen also hinted that his Star Wars character will be going back to the origins of the Rebels, but he didn't say what it would be like. "The history of the Rebel Alliance has always been the most complicated and messy of all," he said.
