UFO Afterlight

UFO Afterlight is an ambitious 3D graphic adventure that focuses on what’s at stake during World War II. Featuring the involvement of comic artist James Cable, you’ll step into the role of an undercover agent (sometimes referred to as “GALACTICALLY”) attempting to reach the bottom of the world in a bid to unravel the truth behind the disappearance of two relatives.

Gamers control not only around 15 different characters, but also time periods such as Libya, Italy and Soviet Union as you try to escape war zones and unravel the cause of a virus. The plot revolves around the possible return of the Vietnam War, and also features the chance to play as a private investigator, Robert R. R. 001.

Despite the graphics being better than what the artist’s credit is worth, the game still looks promising with its unique non-linear gameplay and 3D graphics.

UFO Afterlight is due for release next year.

It’s the only one we can currently tell you is a turn-based tactical game that features some Hollywood talent. You control a squad of soldiers and each member has their own unique skills. You’ll need to micromanage your squads to complete the game, however, as you might expect from a tactical RPG, players won’t just be selecting a soldier and outfitting him with a different loadout. But of course, you can also have him join your squad. With the ability to save your squad at any point, you’ll be able to create your own loadouts, which can then be carried over into a final release.

Sadly, the development team wasn’t able to attend PAX East as they had to be on the receiving end of some tough decision-making, with the only lead being the amount of COGs at the conference. A portion of the demo was dedicated to a specific squad, which included a member of an old squad and a squad of two commandos. It was a particular struggle for the team, as the huge armies of the game had to be culled to appease the “Gears of War enthusiasts”. The decision was made to have two of the four commandos be represented by silhouettes, with the other being a Locust, and one other squad member’s officer. This meant that we couldn’t see any of the new COGs in action, but that was a matter of timing and moving quickly. It’s definitely disappointing that it was no longer possible to use the female soldiers for this demo. This wasn’t to say that the demo wasn’t worth the effort.

Koch Media’s strategy title, Delta Force, was one of the most exciting prospects at E3 2005. Not only did it have a solid premise, it showcased a completely unique control scheme. Players used the analog sticks to move their squad mates on the ground. This allowed for the best cover and therefore team coordination. A single match was required to capture the location of a point. This was then solved by entering an enemy position. Once the enemy was taken out, players were then able to determine whether or not they were the attacker.

But there was one thing missing in Delta Force, and that is the cover system. By utilizing the OICW, a drone, you can either protect your squad mates and attempt to take out enemies that would be hostile to them. This became the most effective cover system in a shooter. This allows for some great gunplay but also gave you a chance to defend yourself from enemies in your own squad. It was a step in the right direction for the team-based strategy genre and we hope to see Delta Force revitalized soon.

The demo also featured the hacking mechanic which allowed players to hack into computers, open doors, hack locked doors, or have a parachute pull them into the sky. This was actually quite innovative because it allowed the players to infiltrate areas while they were on the ground. It gave you the opportunity to take advantage of the powers and their gadgets and then have them do the same to you as you. The game will use two screens--one for each hand. The second screen will display a cinematic to get you up close and personal with the player, while the third will display the action on the ground.
