Two Worlds
Two Worlds II: The Shadow of Incursion has been released on Steam, and it's a blend of both genres, because it has been released under the PC name in some ways. The Shadow of Incursion casts players as an amnesiac, who must choose between 12 different races--and then battle through the evil wizard Mordenkainen, the only living source of his power. The game is based on the massively multiplayer RPG of the same name, which is set in a large fantasy world that makes for an interesting blend. It plays remarkably similar to its predecessor, but it has a number of upgrades that are all you can do with it.
In fact, the way it's worked is pretty great. You can no longer buy new lands, warp, or invent anything you find, but you can buy and trade new stuff. When you want to find a new land or create a town, you can join your people, take in quests, and then share it with other players. The game is quite playable, which is extremely helpful, because it lets you play without actually having to go through the game at all. The game has dozens of creatures that you can capture, some of which have special powers that you can use to defeat enemies or set up traps.
Even the biggest monsters are capable of taking down you if they get too close, but the combat is quite deep, so you'll have to keep an eye on the monster's health. You'll have to keep an eye on what is on the field while you play, because if you get attacked, you'll take damage. When you can't fight, though, you'll go to town and spend your gold on some item to upgrade your equipment, which you can use to make your weapons more powerful. Once you have enough gold, you can start the game from a mercenary camp where you can hire staff and warriors, as well as to hire some other warriors and set up shop. You'll also be able to hire minions to fight for you. Once you have enough money, you can leave the mercenary camp, and your money will come in handy. And you'll even have the opportunity to start a clan in the area where you can create mercenaries.
You'll be able to play the game as you see fit, from the perspective of the young, introverted governor to a young wizard who will teach you the basics of sword fighting and sword fighting. When you're not building up your army, you'll be assigning units, training them, using them, and getting a good idea of your combat strategy. It seems that this will all be done by using a tactical menu and clicking on units you want to bring up, which can be a process that'll take you a few minutes. At the moment, we have a buildable map that shows how many troops you have in a given army, and we're told that there will be over 30 in all.
All of the above is done in real time, although the right one is obviously mapped to your mouse.
After all of this training, you're ready to create your army and build it, but you don't necessarily need to do this as quickly as you'd like, because the units that are assigned will be as advanced as your currently active troops and when they get to do battle. The task of selecting a unit and then selecting an appropriate unit will be performed automatically if you click on it, so you don't need to worry about missing out on anything important. Most of the advanced units will be much more of a bruising melee soldier, and you'll also need to use them to destroy a number of enemy troops, in addition to your own forces. So you'll need to find the right selection of the unit to succeed, as well as that specific unit you want to use for the mission.
In addition to the main game, Warpath also features a special skirmish mode that will let you take on the mission in either the regular or multiplayer matches. These skirmishes will be set up as two different experiences, each of which will be more challenging than the last. This is achieved by destroying enemy barracks, fortresses, and the game's maps. Successful skirmishes will be graded by a multiplier to your player's in-game performance, with the highest (scoring one in a given epoch) on your map. As you win these skirmishes, you'll earn points that can be used to purchase powerful new units, such as the Knight Enforcer and the Hulk, that will change the way you play the game in specific ways.
Warpath will also have a campaign that is based on real events from the war in Iraq. The goals in the campaign are obviously a lot more complicated than the campaign missions we saw, because you'll have to use the environment to your advantage, and you'll have to work hard to take them down. Basically, you have to prevent enemy ships from destroying your home base, and you can use force to temporarily slow down a ship or vehicle that you've lost control of.
