Transformers The Game
Transformers The Game announced in April this year that it would be released on Nintendo DS and GBA next year, but we've been wondering if there was any more news on the game before that announcement. Thankfully, it's now emerged that developer High Moon Studios has announced that it has had the license for Transformers to work on the game, which is based on the forthcoming movie and is scheduled for release on the PS2, PS2, and Xbox in October.
In Transformers The Game, players assume the role of Optimus Prime, a part-time Autobot who has become highly advanced and uses a rather formidable staff. From his old school days in Cybertron, he has become the hunted by the Decepticons, and by acquiring and using the powerful abilities, he can leap over skyscrapers and reach incredible heights. The game will feature seven levels that will be set in locations from the movie, including a junkyard, which is where the game will take place. The Energon planet, which was recently used by the Decepticons, is one of the game's many environments, and it features a unique mix of close-quarters combat and melee combat, and it is packed with vehicles. We got a chance to try out a number of different Autobot vehicles, including massive walkers, a motorcycle, and a large armored mech.
You'll be able to play the game in single-player, two-player, or online, and the game will include 15 Autobots.
The game's single-player campaign will feature five levels, including the classic levels from the movie, and it will also have a mode called Quest of Vengeance where players will be able to battle through classic levels from the movie, such as an abandoned warehouse, a sand duneship, and a desert area. The new game will have a new cinematic camera system that lets you see as many details as you can on the characters in the game, such as their expressions, weapon ranges, and more.
Expect to see Autobots and Decepticons in the game as well as the Autobots in the form of new character models, vehicles, and some new levels in the two-player and four-player multiplayer modes. The game will support Xbox Live for up to eight players.
As far as what's being seen in the game's looks and sounds, Transformers: The Game looks to remain faithful to the film that it's based on, with the game showing off a variety of new animated sequences and Autobots (which are made up of all the main characters from the film) being added to the mix. The stages in the game are full of destructible objects and more than 30 vehicles for you to smash and shoot. The game's control is similar to that of the previous two games, and it is very similar to those in the previous games, although the developers have included a handy lock-on system.
The audio in the game is still a work in progress, but it appears to be coming together well, with a strong sense of flow from the various Transformers car noises. The game's audio still is light on details, but it is a looker, as there's still a bit of mystery surrounding the gameplay, which is somewhat surprising given the movie's setting. We were able to see the game's various Autobots in action, and we got a good sense of their personalities. For example, Optimus Prime and his comrades, Transformer Prime and Fixit Prime, were some of the highlights. They are rather faithful to their cartoon counterparts, with bright green and green color schemes that are on par with the designs of their cartoon counterparts.
Warner Bros. Interactive is promising more gameplay to come, and that's certainly the case with the game's sound design. While you'll still hear your standard assortment of tunes, such as explosions, explosions, and gunfire, you'll also hear riffs and loops that range from headbanging to cranking. The game will also have unique music that's similar to those of a live action film.
The audio in the game seems to be a pretty sharp mix of familiar and new elements. The original Transformers animated series featured some of the best voice acting in the genre. Hearing Optimus Prime and Fixit Prime riff on the themes in the movie isn't exactly going to please most fans, but it's nice to hear the voices in the game. Transformer Prime will feature around 30 licensed characters from the animated series as well, so if you're familiar with them, you'll know what to expect from the show. Each of the 30 characters will sport a unique sound, which is a nice touch. You'll hear some voice samples from Sam Witwer, John Simm, as well as a variety of other Transformers that you can hear as you battle your way through the many different environments. While the main cast won't be in the game, they will all be voiced by their original actors.
