Stormrise
Stormrise is an upcoming competitive multiplayer shooter from space cowboys and MMOG developers Blue Byte and Gigantic. Gamers will start playing as an exiled pilot named Havok and race to gain control of a mysterious, ghostly ship called the U.S.N. III. Havok will have multiple points of attack power and an arsenal of 17 weapons, but the most powerful are weapons that Havok can pick up and use in combat. A small orange dot meter will appear over Havok's head as a weapon indicator. You'll gain the boost by shooting enemies and when your meter is full, Havok will automatically hit enemy targets.
The alien ship in Stormrise is huge and packed with cannons, bombs, and space lasers that take out anything that moves at close range. These guns will last anywhere from 15 to 40 meters, and they can be upgraded with homing torpedoes, ion cannons, and more. In addition to weapons, a specific number of kills will require Havok to sacrifice points for a certain amount of time. With these points, the U.S.N. III's powerful energy shield will allow Havok to absorb only a few hits before being destroyed. The most powerful weapon in the game is the "boss of the empire," and the good thing about having two of these powerful weapons at once is that they can be quickly deactivated when you're not in control of them.
While not all enemies in Stormrise will be hostile, there are plenty of examples of enemy space ships that can be easily damaged with the "boss of the empire" ability. It is also possible to use missiles to temporarily deactivate your enemy's shields, which is useful for taking out enemy ships that come at you from a distance. One of the most powerful abilities in the game is the "super stomp," a special ability that allows Havok to grab a planet and throw it back at your ship, which will allow you to get a sweet, sweet, little bit of extra speed from your enemies. In the game, the super stomp will allow Havok to fly over water to collect water. While the super stomp can be used to take out vehicles, it also does a lot more damage to ships.
In addition to the super stomp ability, your ship can also shoot down enemy ships, destroying all of their ships and finding their generators. The super stomp is also a really cool ability that allows Havok to plant portals in the air to create a trap that can let your ship reach otherwise unreachable places. This also makes it really fun to maneuver the ship around. Since you don't really have to walk around the ship in first person view, you can also hack and slash your enemies into submission by hitting them with your bare hands. These abilities definitely help you in a firefight, since the enemies can take a lot of damage.
The ship also has a crazy speed to it, and it's definitely one of the more satisfying weapons in the game. The other guns are actually a bit more diverse than the previous Quantum Break offerings. You can get rockets and whatever your heart desires, and even have a homing weapon that lets you blow enemies up. Other weapons in the game can turn you into a hovercraft or a mutant, which gives the whole game a nice element of versatility.
The combat in Quantum Break also gets a lot of mileage out of how it's using the Kinect. There are special moves you can perform using the controller, such as the flying execution, where your character spins around, and so on. This is a lot of fun, and gives you the option of a vertical attack, a ground pound, or even a special weapon attack. It's also good to see that the game actually has some sort of dodge button for the Havok attacks, which the weapons don't have.
When it comes to traversal, Quantum Break features some truly cool moments. You'll be able to utilize the in-game flight mechanic to get around. While you'll still be able to fly, the game makes use of the Move controller to allow you to create very impressive leaps and maneuvers.
While the overall experience is serviceable, the combat does get repetitive pretty quickly. It's not a bad thing, as we found that the fights started to get stale fairly quickly. It's not uncommon to find yourself grinding for ammo as you play, with most of the fighting just being a loop of defeating enemies. However, the fact that the fighting can get repetitive quickly doesn't hurt, especially since the stages are very linear.
The story is told through a few hours of cutscenes and voice acting, but the gameplay itself is enjoyable and the gameplay itself is satisfying. You'll be controlling main character Jack as he fights his way through the various enemies that you'll come across. Along the way you'll take control of your in-game girlfriend, Amy, who is the daughter of a scientist, as well as a member of the search and rescue team, Captain Butcher.
