State of War 2
State of War 2 is out now. In our review we described the single-player game as a great reinvention of the real-time strategy franchise. Or the co-op one that was on the backburner for several months. But that wasn't to say that State of War 2 is perfect. The core gameplay is like this: You will fight your way through 3-D battlefields, engage in large-scale skirmishes, and battle to your death in massive war-torn continents. But the real fun will come from gathering resources, waging war, and playing and feeling like you're one of the people on the battlefield.
State of War 2 lets you command an army of COs.
But really, the gameplay is where the real fun begins. The game starts you off with a large army and a powerful army. However, it isn't until you have a squadron of tanks, gunships, aircraft, and infantry that the real depth of a game can begin. The combat in State of War 2 is fast and exciting--and unlike other real-time strategy games, where you don't have to worry about positioning and the enemy's own strategies, the strategy is all about order and careful movement. And you'll need to fight hard to defend your territory, because it's going to be a test of your wits and your wits.
State of War 2 also lets you choose to play as one of two armies: the North Vietnamese and the European Kriegers. Both of the armies are a tough and heavy force, and it's because you can't control one of them. So if you have a "tank," for example, you can't command one of them. However, if you play as the European Kriegers, you can control two of them simultaneously, and they can fight in melee combat. You'll also be able to "commandeer" an enemy unit, but it can't do anything about it. And if you can't, you'll have to command them in any way, since they're powerful units that you'll use against you.
In addition to the single-player campaign, there are a number of multiplayer modes, including one that's really just a skirmish, and one that has both human and machine armies. However, you won't have to deal with that single-player campaign because the AI can take control of every unit, and the AI isn't stupid enough to take over every battle. The AI will act as a random unit, so you won't always have one of them, but it will be able to build more units or just annihilate all of them before they're defeated. It's an interesting system and a big improvement over what some gamers may have gotten used to in other games.
GS: We've heard that the factions in the game will be very different from one another, especially when it comes to the single-player game. How will you balance this diversity?
PS: In skirmish mode, each player is represented by one commander, and the different commanders each have different abilities. In single-player, each commander can switch sides and play as a unit for that mission, or they can join a mission later on in a mission, just like a real commander can do. In skirmish, each commander can switch sides and join a mission, and in skirmish mode, each player can choose a side to control. If he or she prefers to destroy a nearby town, they can do so. If he or she wins, the entire map is taken over by one of the opposing commander's three AI-controlled allies, which will act as the player's own army. In addition to having a multiplayer mode, we've added a single-player campaign called in which the player must fight against the Galactic Empire, led by the evil General Talon. The player is not given any details about the real deal, but you can play through the campaign as either the human or the Dark Lord, and you can't have them together.
There's an impressive amount of ground combat in Supreme Commander, including ground-based dogfights, mammoth ground battle engagements, deep tactical battles, ground-based gun battles, and a series of battles against thousands of computer-controlled units that must be fought before a player can be selected. Of course, there's also the option to play as the more powerful, or less powerful, troops of the Galactic Empire. You can play the game either in single-player or multiplayer. The single-player game can be played in skirmish mode and will be as epic as the others.
We're not only talking about the new campaign, but also the new multiplayer mode that will be included in Supreme Commander.
GS: Tell us about the new multiplayer mode, saying it's geared towards a faster-paced player experience and more tactical gameplay. Could you explain some of the new features in the multiplayer mode?
