StartUp 2000
StartUp 2000 isn't quite what it sounds like. It's "from" another continent, with mostly Canadian roots. All we have are two letters, and you'll find them listed underneath the Open web browser. Here's how it works: Open the browser and you'll be able to download the software.
Click the StartUp 2000 button in the web browser, and you'll be presented with a blank StartUp window, each with a tiny menu and a different address. Click StartUp 2000 and you'll be taken to a location list with a group of buttons.
This is easy enough. Click StartUp 2000, choose the list of sites and follow the instructions on the main menu. This is how you browse the web, as we've seen in more recent software, like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and more. Click StartUp 2000 and you'll be presented with a very clean, red-capped StartUp 2000 screen. The list is then organized by location and has four tabs: News, Apps, and Sites.
The All Sites section presents you with a list of all your Google-related sites. A 'Content' section enables you to search for and download the free websites available to you. A 'Browser' tab lets you browse directly from one website or from a web store. You can access the full list of Sites and Sites in one place, too.
Browsing the list with a click is pretty simple. Tap Search, and there's a big search bar, a list of all your files, folders, and more. Click and drag a box to sort by URL, type in URL, or URL, and you're done.
The Search Engine Optimizer works in much the same way as any other filter tool, though. Choose an empty page, for instance, and you're presented with more options: copy it, duplicate it, duplicate it, paste it, or schedule it.
There's a helpful search box in the top-right corner of the screen, with a 'No Website' button, some strange icon at the bottom of the page, and a big search box at the top of the page. (You might even see a well-kept 'To Mine' icon in the top right of the screen.)
The Search Engine Optimizer isn't perfect, though. And if you're just happy to get rid of the default filter, you can tweak more, like defining which website will automatically take longer to index than the rest.
It's good to see more regular Search Engine Optimizer options, and they're all well executed, and we could see more people using other web hosting providers than this simple tool.
The Good Hosting Services supports installing WordPress or more, for instance, but that doesn't cover all the main web hosting essentials. You have to pay for extra services, too, and the service doesn't have many of the best free website builder options (Namecheap's WordPress, VPS (opens in new tab) and dedicated server hosting, for instance).
There are exceptions. Scala Hosting's CDN-based Starter plan supports 150GB storage, unlimited bandwidth, 1GB traffic and support for using up to five websites, for instance, while ScalaHosting's lower plan only supports 150GB.
Prices are reasonable, starting at $1.99 a month over three years, and you can upgrade to a 2TB plan for $2.95 a month over three years. We found Scala Hosting's WordPress plans cheaper than many competitors, but they don't offer enough power for the price, and you're paying for what you'll get.
The interface is basic, too. The site has only three plans, one with 100GB storage, one with 80GB traffic, one with 50GB bandwidth and free SSL, and the other with 2GB RAM and 50GB storage. It's priced reasonably, too, with only five plans available.
What else you need to know
If you're unhappy with the design, or just don't need it, there's 24/7 support via live chat, ticket and email. ticket sent over the phone, but there's no live chat. Scala Hosting's knowledgebase is only available in the UK, and there's no ticket support.
Fortunately, Scala Hosting's web dashboard has a knowledgebase with articles organized into common hosting categories such as email, SSL certificates, domains, and EasyWP (Namecheap's WordPress range).
These articles are arranged in a very clear way, and include the usual information you'll find in the hosting environment. We found the articles to be delivered in a clear, understandable order, and the company quickly explained what we needed to do to make them work.
In terms of speed, our site hosted on Scala Hosting performed fractionally slower than average, and delivered much more speed. But the real highlight here was the company's managed WordPress hosting feature, which managed to unblock all but the UK's biggest content management and most major credit card and PayPal credit card transactions.
