Star Ocean Second Evolution
Star Ocean Second Evolution is the newest installment in the Star Ocean series, which was originally planned for release on the PlayStation Portable. The sequel to the 1998 role-playing game from the same team as Star Ocean, Star Ocean Second Evolution is set to be the biggest Star Ocean title yet. But it will be the first to incorporate a full open world for players to explore. In addition to the open world of Star Ocean 2, the game will feature improved graphics and effects, including a new 3D engine. While details about the open-world aspect of Star Ocean will remain largely unknown, it is exciting to see what direction the developers are taking with Star Ocean 2. For more details on Star Ocean Second Evolution, check out our previous coverage of the game.
Star Ocean Next Generation First Impressions: The graphical improvements will be apparent in Star Ocean Second Evolution. Characters in Star Ocean are fluid and animate smoothly, thanks to the PS2's capabilities. The backgrounds are also improved, and there are greater details in the terrain that give it an additional dimension. Characters' facial expressions have also been improved, so you can discern at a glance the difference between a friend or foe.
In Star Ocean: Next Generation, each planet can have multiple levels of background detail. There is a definite beauty to the environments because the environments contain all sorts of little details that lend the game a rich, cinematic feel. To this end, Star Ocean has looked to the most traditional in-game cutscenes to date. There are a number of cinematic sequences that seem to enhance the game's cinematic qualities. The two moments where you get to see Star Ocean: Next Generation's graphics appear to be close to what you'd expect out of a movie based on a game. At a glance, you may recognize the features of the movie's voice actors, who may be delivering their lines as voice actors. The clips shown were full of high-quality cinematic effects, with crisp textures and highly detailed facial expressions. The game's sound effects are also quite impressive. While the movie's sound is top-notch, the game's music is also quite catchy. The sound effects are just as impressive, and the musical score is top-notch. The speech in the game is all done in real-time, and you'll hear the various sounds of your crew talk to you, but the speech itself isn't in a specific sequence. In addition, the game's inventory system uses real-time Dolby Digital technology, which makes the action feel very interactive. As you progress through the game, you'll gain access to the inventory system, which, as you play through the game, will include a full-featured collection of items to help you out. The inventory system is also reminiscent of the one found in Sega's Shining Force series, which featured a number of items that you could use to set up a force-field. For example, you could pick up an item in the game's world and put it in your inventory, then place it in your inventory, which would automatically assign it to a chamber or room. Other items, like the flashlight, will be hidden in your inventory, but you won't be able to pick up any items in your inventory, because they will be permanently on you. This inventory system should make everything that you need much easier to manage during the course of the game, since you'll have access to things like a flashlight, the fire extinguisher, and even the aforementioned flashlight and fire extinguisher.
A mix of elements like these should make the combat that much more manageable, since there is no end in sight and you'll have plenty of options for what kinds of weapons you want to equip. In addition, we've been able to check out a preview version of the Xbox version of the game that has the same basic game mechanics as the PC game. The preview build that we've been given in progress seems to have an overall pacing of around 30 percent and about 45 percent, so even if you do get stuck, the game should get you through.
The graphics in the game are looking sharp and are high-end, but you won't have to worry about anything much, since you'll see details like a number of particle effects and clouds onscreen at once. The characters in the game feature a solid collection of 2D characters who have their own individual personalities and designs, which can be tweaked to add more personality. The level of detail is also very good. The characters are detailed and feature quite a bit of personality. The environments, while obviously a bit larger than in the PC game, feature a good amount of detail. One scene in particular features a number of interesting places that you can shoot your foes in. This level also features a number of destructible objects that will let you pick up and throw your enemies in certain places. You'll even have to take out an enemy from long range.
The game's audio is looking very good.
