Spelunky
Spelunky has just received its final expansion and is a lot more than the sum of its parts. The final addition is levels editor, which allows you to build your own levels. In addition to the level editor, new items will also be made available. Here are the current features for Spelunky - it's worth looking out for.
The Player's Handbook - The most difficult content-creation tool in Spelunky, Spelunky players will now have the ability to create, edit, and share their own level levels with other players via the game's community web site.
To further assist the community, Sony's PlayStation Plus service will now allow players to create their own levels from scratch, and those created on the PSN service will have the opportunity to see their work in this part of the game. The existing community-made levels will be made available via the console's online store, and their creations can be saved for use on a PlayStation 3.
Spelunky's final DLC, the Whimsical Adventure, will arrive on the PSN on December 2. Sony's blog has also outlined the game's platform exclusivity and pricing, while Spelunky will be available for all platforms at a discount.
Will the PS4 ever really be all about adding free content? Speaking with Polygon, Sony's John Koller acknowledged that it's not really going to happen. "It's going to be more, more, more content-packed. It's just about giving the community what they want," he said. "We're going to try to do what they want. But what we're looking at is the whole point of free content, is what we want to be doing. What we're looking at, that's going to be really interesting. I don't want to be right in that."
We also asked Koller about the status of the PSN for Spelunky's multiplayer mode, explaining that it was officially up and running, but "it's pretty early" and that the game is still in development. "It's in our pre-production stage, but we're very excited about it, I'm confident. We've got some great stuff planned for the beta."
"We have some amazing stuff planned," Koller explained. "We have stuff planned. I think it's kind of amazing to get in there at the same time as other publishers, what they're looking at is, if they're looking at developing for the online world, where they've got things like a Facebook element, that's got things like that. That's going to be great. It's not just something that we have to worry about. It's something that we're all very excited about. It's something that will be a lot of fun to go up against. I think we're going to be able to see and really try it out."
He also said that the current character types and weapons that gamers are used to will be the focus of the beta, which can be expected in the near future.
"The best thing is that you'll see lots of weapons, especially the old ones," Koller said. "It will be great for people to go up against some of these guys that will be very aggressive on their heels. I don't know if they will be able to catch one or two of them, but we're really excited about it. That's a great, great thing."
Last week, Koller added that he and his team were still "trying to figure out how to do this," which I'd be lying to you. Koller said that he had been waiting on his team's mouse wheel for about a month, and that "no one has a functioning mouse on them" but said that they "could, should" see a new controller, which makes sense considering that the original Xbox controller had a right analog stick that the PlayStation 2 pad used.
"I think that the fact that we were making a controller that could adapt to any platform, just the controller has never been one that people expected," Koller said. "It's only in the sense that it is different to what you get on the PC and what you get on the console. But for the platform and our goal is to have a high degree of functionality that allows people to play our games."
Koller added that he thought it "makes the game feel even more enjoyable" on PC, and added that he and his team will try to make mouse-and-keyboard controls that are "like something out of Halo."
Facing problems on PC is not something Koller would be in a rush to address because the hardware is available at a lower price point and in the time they need it. For PS4, which is supposed to be the biggest-selling console ever this holiday season, Koller said, Sony has focused on supporting its hardware well enough that Sony is able to put out a system that can run it at the lowest price point.
