Shadowgrounds is a fast-paced shooter where your goal is to get all of the titular force fields--you'll get them--and jump onto platforms to bounce onto them. However, your primary goal is to find an exit and to climb it. The levels will keep changing as you progress, so be sure to drop by the area marked on your map and be prepared for any new dangers. In fact, it's only at one point in the game where you'll have to stop and take a break to watch the world shift into something else.

Shadowgrounds is controlled entirely with a twin-stick setup. You'll start the game with two weapons and one body of water and each has a different use for the respective body of water. Your action, however, is a more active role, as the game only takes a few seconds to pick up. As you begin each level, there's a limited number of available weapons and items to upgrade. You'll also get to upgrade your body using the upgradeable items you acquire as you go, which you can find scattered around the levels. Your powers won't always be good, however. For example, you'll have to pick up power-ups you find while wandering around levels that require you to use water to power up and charge up. These power-ups aren't essential to progressing through the game, since you'll probably want to simply power-up more quickly.

Once you've got your trusty water gun, you'll gain the ability to call in fire on specific targets. These fire specific areas that are on a timer, and you'll be able to move through them using a similar layout to the levels in which you'll start. The enemy on display in this level is large robots that attack in groups, which you'll have to take down if you hope to score some good points. The targeting system seems to be fairly sensitive, and the level ends when the robots are defeated. One cool feature in the game is that you can perform certain combo attacks when you hit certain switches or switches, or you can punch enemies in midair to let loose a quick flurry of blows.

The game's camera angles are a good complement to the on-screen action, although it occasionally gets a bit choppy as you move.
