Sanguo Zhao
Sanguo Zhao’s Chinese shoot-fest, The Hunt , will open in China on 10 July 2013.
The big-budget movie is a Western based on the novel of the same name by writer Terry Gilliam, who famously penned Seven Of Nine Inch Nails for Zhang Feng.
The film will see Zhao reunite with her directing squad as master storyteller, Ali Abbasi, who also helmed the likes of The Secret Service , Black Swan , Clash and The Princess And The Frog .
In a new featurette, the actress discusses her thinking of a role in The Hunt , noting: “I was talking to Gong, who is a master storyteller, and I saw that [the ] field was set in such a way that people who work in the world have no idea that we are taking a story they know and love, and they also know the fact that we’re going to put it in China, because we can’t forget that you have to bring a person back to this country that knows how to tell a story that’s going to be interesting, and to bring something new to people.”
Yuan Zhang is joined by sister-and-rival Saoirse Ronan, with her playing the actress's older brother, the soldier Izen, who is set to appear in the film. Ronan will be seen playing those who are not with him, and we are not sure what to do with his character, but it is certainly possible that he will appear, as are his older brother, the soldier Izen, and the woman Izen is looking for.
In China, due to Zhang's close relationship with her mother, his older brother can’t help but feel pressured to take a child. He said: "I have never thought about taking a child. The idea that this character is only about raising and loving to another character is a very uncomfortable thought. It’s something we all have a lot of ideas about in a lot of ways."
With this being a young actor, their performance will also be impacted by the political situation, as Zhang is not known for playing a child. He also explained to GamesRadar: "There's no one right for this. We are young, we are youth, we are the children. You can’t trust them because they don’t have the screen time to reflect on their situation. They’re not the child you want to be, and we all have issues with this."
Reng’s daughter, Diego, grew up in Hong Kong, fighting in the Soviet Union. Though she doesn’t have as much of a relationship with Liu Kang, Diego's mother is gay, so her strong sense of justice would shine through. "I really like her because I have such an issue with gay people, so I’m looking forward to that," he says. "And as it is, I really like Diego’s accent, that I like to have when I tell the truth to myself. There’s a possibility that we could use him as a voice."
"There’s an ongoing conversation that goes around the elephant in the room with the Asian state that goes on, and I love that situation," the actor says. "And the theme of homosexuality is the more of a concern I’m looking forward to. Because we have characters that are gay, and we’re willing to do that, and they have a sensitivity to those who are not, but we’re still in this bubble of homosexuality. And I love that feeling of self-worth. It’s a really strong statement of feeling. I think we were able to do that with Diego, as a queer character."
On the subject of the larger issue of LGBTQ+ representation in movies, Holland's character Cassie Lang is still being kept out of a couple of scenes. With the release of a trailer, which also featured a trailer with a lot of LGBTQ+ highlights, the movie will feature plenty of romantic moments, but will also feature plenty of fun moments, as Cassie meets up with a couple of diverse characters and begins getting into some serious relationship stuff.
Bale wants to continue her efforts to change her sexuality as much as possible in this movie. She stated, "It’s a part of her story. And so, I’m always interested in that. And I’m very interested in how this story unfolds. But as a director, you have to give me an opportunity to have some internal conversations. And when it does, I try to tell what I thought would work. And so, when you're making these movies, we try to create some dialogue with the audience.
