Off-road arena
Off-road arena sports have made an impact on mainstream sports with games such as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Road Rash. These games have evolved in a number of ways, but their underlying philosophy of player skill and flair is still relatively unique. Developer Sport Interactive was founded by former Eurocom/ILM team members, including former Lewis Hamilton and Tom Hall, and has enlisted the likes of Iceman, Aaron deJerei, and Tupac-Williams to lead its own company, Offroad Unleashed.
Off-road racing games are now based on real-world air traffic, and that's a focus on ensuring players can survive on the track, which includes more than 75 events. At the event, players will participate in eight new and original events, including the A-Day Fever, Desert Storm, Port Sosa, and TenRide events, the Tivoli Cross, and the Britain Experiment, an all-new World Race in the '80s (having been named after the 25th anniversary of the big three). In the '80s the series jumped into the esports scene, and the game's successor, Off-road Fury, made a name for itself with a round of events in '90s and '00s action film genres.
The old '90s/early 2000s saw a lot of dormant titles join the ranks of high-profile racing games, including Juiced, Midnight Club, and Ridge Racer, with a few notable exceptions. In 2000 there was the PlayStation 2 racing title Project Gotham Racing 2: Season of the Dragon, a sequel to the PlayStation 2 racing game developed by Bizarre Creations, and the GameCube game Moto GP: World Tour. Unfortunately the series never saw a new entry, as it was also the studio's last, with the series going away in 1997.
We've seen multiple attempts at a reboot over the years, with this one being more 'disappointing', with Activision Value releasing the follow-up in 2010, and Take-Two going all-in on a franchise that had seemed destined to never see the light of day. The series never got a new entry in 2013, as it was famously abandoned by Activision in 2017, but that doesn't mean it never made it to the big time.
The original Driver trilogy is an outstanding action-adventure, driving and action-packed. While a sequel wasn't ever released, the original series is still seen as a thrilling, well-crafted piece of media and Driver: San Francisco is still held in high regard.
