Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy
Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy was announced for the PS2 last month, and although we haven't been able to play it for a while, we did get some good word of it at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Check out the trailer.
Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy will take place 15 years after the original game, when the King Xerxes lands at the end of the Great War. He then gains powers and a new set of weapons, one of which is the Bane, a deadly weapon.
Nostradamus will play the role of a soldier who will be the focus of a tactical firefight between Xerxes and Empire. The game's story will have "five chapters," each with three chapters. If you've played the original, you'll already know that you'll have two different viewpoints of the King Xerxes and will be surprised at how much emphasis the sequel will have on narrative elements. It will also be interesting to see how the two protagonists will play out, as the original game included some very mature themes.
We'll have a full preview of the game soon.
Frank Sagnier, GameSpot's director of product development, commented that, while the experience of working on The Last Prophecy will be similar to the one that had been in development for several years, the sequel will include "a few new elements." One of the new elements being introduced in the sequel will be the camera, which has been "reinforced" from previous titles. This will allow you to focus more on the action and not worry too much about making the camera too rigid, or indeed keeping it too simplistic and uncluttered.
The camera can also be rotated out to have different views depending on which you're using. For example, if you have two cameras, you can be both using one camera and one rotating the camera. The camera will also be able to zoom out, though it will be difficult to tell how much a group of enemies are in the game at a given time. Another interesting feature is the context-sensitive buttons. These function as indicators for pressing one button, which when pressed will send you off the screen. "Tapping" a button will prompt a nearby object, such as a fuse box, to fire a reticule. It's also possible to send off a reticule by dragging it up and down.
Although the team has focused on bringing a brand-new team of characters to the game, which features a character based on Indiana Jones, Epic Games has taken the opportunity to flesh out the different characters as well as the environments. There are also no character classes to choose from, so it's not like you'll have to spend a lot of time with the various characters to pick up on their unique abilities. You'll also have to work together to complete the game's single-player campaign. For those who may be familiar with the original, the plot finds you joining forces with Indy's father, who is searching for the Skull of Doom and is pursuing the evil leader, the nefarious Malachorak. You'll also be introduced to a number of classic Indy elements in the game, such as the whip and whip, the weapon of choice of the whip and the boomerang, and some of the boss characters from the previous game.
Since there are a number of different environments to explore, Epic has provided fertile ground for all the gameplay elements. The game features a cinematic look and some dramatic set pieces, which fans of the films will appreciate. As mentioned before, the visuals are one of the most impressive elements of the game. The environments feature a strong level of detail, which is complemented by some impressive special effects. The game's audio is an enhanced variation on what was seen in the original game, offering new voice and music. The audio in the game features a strong mix of new elements and familiar sounds, which complement the various sequences. The voice acting is top notch, offering new and old fans alike a voice that matches the tone of the game.
Based on what we've seen so far, Risk of Rain 2 is shaping up to be a much tighter game than its predecessor. The game's frame rate, while still rough around the edges, is working nicely on the Xbox 360 and should provide an impressive experience when played on the Xbox. The audio in the game is solid, thanks to the game's impressive sound, which has the visuals in spades. You'll find the same collection of tunes that you'd expect from the original game's soundtrack as well. You'll find a nice assortment of tunes on offer as well. The game's audio is well done and features a solid complement of new tunes that are complemented by some good old old-school bangers thrown in for good measure.
Based on what we've seen so far, Risk of Rain 2 is a strong offering from developer Hopoo Games.
