Nexagon Deathmatch
Nexagon Deathmatch is a Quake III-style multi-player deathmatch mode with four players who must battle it out in a series of locations inspired by all 50 of the world's warring factions. Each player is armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun, and an energy sword. The game includes five main weapons, including the assault rifle, the energy sword, the battle ax, the laser, the mounted minigun, and the energy sword. There are different maps, different teams of players, and every class of player has access to different weapons, including the traditional assault rifle, the rifle, the railgun, the railgun, the laser, the jetpack, the double-barreled gun, the gravity gun, the rocket launcher, and the energy sword. The maps are suitably fast-paced, and the amount of weapon switching between weapons and spells is a significant factor in the survival game. For a full rundown of the game, check out our linked interview with developers J.C. Brumère and Max Payne's art director, Craig T. and Marc Sadok.
Sitting on the proverbial hobbit, the graphics in Sam & Max: Freelance Police are what makes this game stand out from the rest of the other Max games. The engine pumps out clean, richly detailed textures that really bring the world of the game to life. But you're going to need a steady supply of witnesses, which means that if you're not familiar with the setting or the story, the game might be hard to track down. Sam is an ordinary detective, but he's not going to pay much attention to everything, which means that the game isn't much of a challenge. If you're not familiar with the characters, or are a sucker for cheap action, you'll be missing out on some of the crazier side-scrolling action that the game is known for. The third-person camera angle also makes Sam very twitchy, so it makes it easy to switch between the characters and where to shoot.
Sam & Max are all about stylish gunplay and acrobatic maneuvers.
We tried a two-player mode, which has Sam chasing down criminals, as well as an episodic mode that has Sam moving into a new area and having to use his flashlight to locate clues. The third-person mode is essentially a two-player cooperative experience, but it's not required. It's not an all-new mode that comes with the new game.
Sam & Max: Freelance Police (7.1) The Game Boy Advance version of the game will include three bonus levels, including a cemetery area where players will find weapons and items. The new levels were all taken directly from the Game Boy Advance game, and they will feature new enemies and a new location in the game. The three bonus levels, aptly named "Rapture of Shadows," have Sam fighting off hordes of zombies and the wrath of Mortimeran zombies, respectively. The two-player mode lets two players play together cooperatively. The game will feature 16 different playable characters in four-player local and online modes. Each character will have his or her own unique set of weapons and items, such as a flashlight, a magnet gun, an axe, a pistol, and a shovel. We got to play a number of levels in the game, including the cemetery and a wide open area with a cemetery and a secret cemetery. The game's difficulty is to scale to avoid the use of the limited time you have to hit the zombies, so instead, you'll find that you have to be more precise when hitting zombies with your weapons. For example, the quest for a cryptkeeper will require you to find keys to open locked doors, and then get into the dungeon. The game's physics are pretty forgiving, especially when you first start playing. Sam is the only character that can kick zombies in the head, and he has a very long list of weapons. As you progress, you'll unlock more weapons, but he can't use the weapons you've collected in the previous stages of the game.
We didn't get to try out any multiplayer deathmatch levels in the game. In the cemetery level we played, we saw one team facing off against four players, and one player took on the role of a wraith who must revive a group of survivors. The wraith kills a number of zombies, and when a team successfully kills another teammate, he will be returned to life. In fact, the game will let you enter the graveyard and heal yourself with no zombies. In multiplayer deathmatch mode, you can move through walls and battle a number of zombies simultaneously.
The game's controls are quite intuitive. The main menu for your inventory system has a number of different categories you can choose from, including two toggles that let you change the interface settings. You can also flip on the camera by pressing the X button, which lets you view the action from farther away.
