Monstersville
Monstersville is coming back from the dead, but that's not the reason we're afraid – this writer really does love the cartoon. And so, his departure from the TV show's comic books is all to do with his long-running series, Monstersville, which will have to wait until sometime in 2014.
It was originally set to premiere at the beginning of 2010, but Lucasfilm has delayed the original release until 2013.
TechRadar caught up with Disney's executive vice president of Walt Disney Studios, Hugh Dancy, to talk about the decision to switch its board to Disney, and what they had to say about the decision to take the license to the animated franchise.
TechRadar: What was the impact of the new rights?
M Hugh Dancy: While there were some potential issues that arose from a compromise between Disney and the streaming service provider, the real-deal was Disney retaining all rights in the licensed content library to the property. We had a few licensing issues that had caught the attention of Disney, but ultimately, our agreement with the streaming service was the best path forward for Disney.
"And I mean, it's a wonderful film to work with.
"When we got the license to the animated IP, we were very pleased with how the movie did at the time. We were able to get it onto more platforms than we had been able to do before.
"We were really happy with how the movie did at the time.
"And we're pretty pleased with how it did at the time, which is why I think we managed to get it onto more platforms than Disney did at the time.
"I think that our partnership with Disney is incredibly strong and we have a great relationship with all of them. It is a great partnership, and I'm very happy with the way it has been going.
"So I'm very pleased with how it has been going on with Disney. I think they've helped us out a lot. And I'm very happy with the way the movie has been going. I think the music is a really nice touch, and I can't wait to see what they come up with."
The news that a second Disney animated project is in the works for Disney Plus sounds good to me. I really love how the movie has been going so far. So much so that it's just amazing that it's been going on with Disney again.
For me, the most fun to come out of my experience with Disney is that when we were together and had a working relationship, we were able to really play our part. But on the other hand, it's been such a roller coaster ride. We've been talking about how the movies are made together. In the first two phases of the movie, we just sort of made it as though we're making a movie, so it was like, how can we do a video game, where you can actually make a video game, and make a film? The second phase is pretty exciting, but also something that's obviously a Disney movie. And then finally, it's a bunch of other things that make us think, 'Alright, maybe we should just try to make it as good as we can.' I think we could always do it.
Q: A lot of what's new about Frozen II is just how much has been added to the story. What are some of the new story ideas that will come with the movie?
A: There's so many new things that were written and talked about that I'd put it off. There's new characters, and they're going to be very different, and then they're gonna have to deal with the world and everything that we are doing in this movie. And I'd put it off because it's a movie, and it's a story that doesn't really fit within the broad world of the game, and I wouldn't even say that that's a unique, interesting movie.
That's one of the biggest questions I've had with Frozen II, and that is just a spoiler, so let's just say I'm going to go ahead and correct that.
There's going to be a lot of little things. We're going to see the big new cast of characters that we can talk about, and there's going to be a lot of new faces in this movie.
It's going to be the most expansive world ever, and it's going to be the biggest world we've ever built. So the best way to describe it is "this is all this world, this is this giant, almost clouded valley." It's one of the most beautiful world we've ever created. I think the biggest thing about it is that it's very open, and I think the scale and scope of the world is really outstanding. It's not a huge world, but it's so grand and beautiful.
We can also look at it from a side-by-side comparison.
