Midway Arcade Treasures

Midway Arcade Treasures for the Xbox will feature two classic arcade classics from the past and present, both of which feature cooperative gameplay, 16-bit graphics, and a host of Easter-themed humor. The games included are San Francisco Rush, Block Attack, Panic, Pong, and Top Gear, the first two arcade games that are all making their way to the new Xbox. We had a chance to sit down with the folks at Midway and check out these arcade classics, and we're pleased to report that they're incredibly fun.

San Francisco Rush is a racing game that's more focused on vertical split-screen gameplay and features quite a bit of karting action. When you're on the track, you'll use the analog stick to select your driver, jump, drift, boost, and activate special abilities by holding down the B button. Most of the moves are fairly standard fare, except for the special power-ups that pop up. The final unlockable character in Midway Arcade Treasures is a band of chubby-looking ninja dogs, as well as a few others that we've unlocked thus far.

You'll have four character slots to pick from in the game, as well as three vehicle slots for customization purposes. The game includes four racetracks, one course, two cup slots, and two cup slots. All of the characters in the game, from the crotchety ninja dogs to the game's insect-inspired ninjas, are from the original arcade version of the game. Each character has a different move set, and the unique abilities for each character are represented by the different color-coded icons you'll be able to select from. For example, the light ninjas have a dash attack that knocks all enemies into the air, while the slower, more powerful ninjas have a glide attack that lets you pick up onto walls and ladders.

The game's 16 courses are broken up into seven levels, and the last two are not quite as spacious as those found in the arcade game. You'll find that the levels generally include plenty of places to go, such as caverns and indoor areas. While it isn't too surprising that the number of vehicles is generally on the small side, it's also a lot of fun to take on some of the game's trickier levels. Besides the aforementioned obstacles and you'll have to contend with tricky enemies that fire at you, you'll be able to use your feet to jump, and the game features a nice lineup of combo attacks. As far as the fighting mechanics are concerned, you'll find some nice touches to the gameplay. For example, you'll be able to bash enemies off of ledges or hang from walls, giving the levels a unique feel.

The visuals in the game are shaping up nicely and offer a stylish presentation that features some eye candy. The level we played featured a richly stylized look that featured some slick art. The frame rate held up pretty well in the Xbox game. While it's obviously still early, the frame rate is coming together quite nicely.

The audio in the game is shaping up nicely and offers a good complement to the core experience. You'll hear assorted voice samples that serve to flesh out the experience. You'll hear a good assortment of effects that will complement the action. You'll find a solid assortment of punk rock you'll hear that complements the music. You'll hear a bit of rap you'd like added to the experience. You'll hear some funky instrumental remixes and some funky organ blasting. You'll hear some classic Dizzee Rascal vibes that help set the tone. You'll also hear some samples from rock classics from around the world that will shake up the package. You'll hear some familiar tunes from the ring you'll see in the game as well. You'll hear some modern remixes as well.

The visuals in the game are shaping up nicely and offer a solid visual experience. The special effects in the game are looking good and are a nice complement to the gameplay. You'll find a good assortment of cool touches as well. The assorted foes you'll fight will offer a solid level of variety thanks to a solid assortment of foes that fit the fighting style you'll be engaging in.
