Mercenaries 2 World in Flames
Mercenaries 2 World in Flames is the sequel to 2003's Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, and judging from the screenshots released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it has a lot going for it.
The cel-shaded shoot-'em-up takes the action and vehicles from the original game and adds three new playable characters, the agile Archer and the nimble Corrosion. You'll find a handful of weapons, such as the flamethrower and flamethrower, as well as special powers such as lightning, sniper, and laser, to spice up your combat.
The level of visual quality is the closest any Pandemic Studios has come to the game so far, though it's tough to say for sure when you're punching enemies from a distance. Hopefully this will improve upon the slick graphics found in the original game and provide some much needed diversity in the game's missions.
Mercenaries 2 is scheduled to ship for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Based on what we've seen, Mercenaries 2 looks to be one of the most graphically impressive shooters this year. Though the first game ended up using a lot of gameplay refinements, it seems the second installment's changes are more important than their immediate impact on gameplay. In keeping with the narrative, the game's story is set in Venezuela and follows the game's action as it moves through the country.
The game's visuals are coming together in the form of high-quality animation that is taking place in both indoor and outdoor environments. The frame rate, while maintaining a smooth 60 frames per second, is still pretty inconsistent at times--check the settings tab in the settings menu for the above reference. We're not sure what the resolution at this point in time is, but given the game's graphical capabilities, it looks to be OK. The game's audio will feature a strong emphasis on sound. The voice acting is complemented by excellent musical score that sets the game's ambient ambience to a high level of madness.
The audio in Call of Juarez is a diverse one.
Though the Xbox version of the game will support the online multiplayer options of the PC version, the PlayStation 2 version won't support the headset functionality. And while the PlayStation 2 version supports cooperative play, the Xbox version supports the Dual Shock 2 controller. Both versions of the game will also support up to eight players in split-screen multiplayer. In addition, the PS2 game will have a feature called a "switching console player" feature that lets you swap between the two consoles using the right analog stick. It doesn't seem to be as effective as the Nintendo 64's controller, but we'll be sure to see how it goes. The Xbox version of Call of Juarez features a wealth of different multiplayer modes, which makes it a fine choice for those looking for a fun, fast-paced game that not only offers single-player or deathmatch options, but also for split-screen action. The PlayStation 2 version will also have a map editor that allows you to create your own maps. The PC version will also feature a party mode that lets you and a friend play together. The PC version of Call of Juarez is being developed by Techland, the same team that worked on the Dead Island series.
Call of Juarez will feature a total of four chapters, which will be in part inspired by the events of the original Call of Juarez. The most obvious difference between the two games, according to the game's story, are the characters. The story in Call of Juarez is told through flashbacks, which have the protagonists recount their stories to various characters in their younger days. The flashbacks will also serve to expand on the themes of the first two games.
In terms of gameplay, Call of Juarez: The Cartel will feature a control scheme that is similar to that of Call of Juarez. The game will offer a combination of third-person shooting, RPG elements, and an old-school third-person shooter-style feel. The action will be free-flowing, with you using your gun to shoot at enemies from a distance, but it's also possible to use your gun as a grappling hook. In addition, there will be a system that will let you move in close to enemies to execute a brutal execution move.
You'll be able to upgrade your weapons through a set of skill trees. The choices that you make will be based on how you play the game. In the original Call of Juarez, you could upgrade your character with headgear and a scoped weapon. This time around, you'll also have the option to specialize your character with a knife or even a pistol. Of course, there will be elements of the combat as well, such as a sniper rifle or machine gun, which are used to great effect. You'll be able to use the melee attack to hurl your enemies into the air, which will also cause a big-headed dog to follow you.
