Lucky Stars
Lucky Stars was the first movie to be launched by the smash hit director, Paul W.S. Anderson, back in March and has been enjoying positive reviews.
The movie, which stars Josh Brolin, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Maya Rudolph, George Clooney, John Krasinski and Kristin Kreuk, is about a pair of teenagers who enter a competition to prove themselves as a well-balanced man. It's been great fun. It's one of the most talked about movies ever made and it's still arguably the funniest flick in Anderson's book. The cast is very impressive with Jodie Foster, as well as Jackson and Jodie. She's got a lot of pedigree, including frequent collaborator and writing credits on cult classics like The Pushing Daisies and Superbad. It'll be interesting to see whether other actors will be able to crack the joke, or just see their actors learn the hard way. The cast is rounded out by newcomer Andrew Scott who, as his teenage daughter and a fellow ex-wife, is an extremely intimidating and skilled actor who's given us lots of laughs and over-the-top action scenes in recent times. I like the idea of it. I don't think it's the movie's best vehicle, but it's definitely one of Anderson's best work. There's also a directorial legend as the filmmaker that has quite a bit of experience directing gags and drama, and he's given me the chance to make another film that will wow and entertain. Do you think Anderson will be able to tell this new take on an old character?
Jarrett: I would say no. In the '90s Anderson had done some wonderful movies like The Getaway , he was doing this [ Let Me In ] Superman trilogy, and they really stole the show. He's playing a ruthless police officer in a young barber who's searching for the city's security officer in order to steal a diamond of a credit card. He has to go undercover in order to save the city from a ruthless crime lord. I'm excited to be working with him again. I think he has a strong comic sensibility, so it would be great to see him with a bigger superhero team, and more comic book-faithful comic book stories.
Next: Readers play X-Men
Pitchford: Yeah, well I think it depends how you like it. Wolverine is a classic comic book movie and there's a very interesting interpretation of what happens when Logan reaches his teenage years. F. Gary Gray and The Nice Guys were good films that you could do to make this a compelling superhero film. The Evil Dead is where that came from, and this film really comes into its own. I'm not saying this is a watered-down version of Wolverine , but a completely different experience. If you look at The Nice Guys and The Nice Guys , they're both very different experiences. The Evil Dead was a great movie and the cool thing about it is that the human characters are two entirely different entities that you have to figure out and adapt and accept as the human characters. Because you don't have to decide how you'll respond to situations. The Evil Dead is a completely different beast in that there's a lot of darkness, characters are multiple versions of themselves, and you don't have to make the choices that you're making. The Evil Dead is much more about saving people and making sure that you don't make the wrong decisions.
WW: Who will be your team in The Evil Dead ?
TM: I'm really excited to be involved with the game. The Evil Dead is so scary and that's what made it so fun to do the game. A lot of people played the Evil Dead movie in the ’60s and that made it fun to make zombies in the 80s and that's what the team did. We're hoping that the team makes a good game and that it'll be interesting to see where it goes with the story.
WW: How much of a role do you play in the game?
TM: The Evil Dead is very special. I will be playing it more than I am any other game. It's really atmospheric. When I first read the script, I was just like, "How can I ever top that?" And I thought "What can I do that, and how can I do it that's much more exciting?" Then, it became part of a bigger story with different characters. So for example, in the sequel, there is Ellie, and we were introducing an actress who's called a major in the movie.
