Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge
Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge is a race based on the motor-car racing scene. In this game you drive a "huge set of wheels" and do stunts in a variety of high-performance vehicles that use up all the racing abilities of a small group of cars. The most exciting features in this game are the "wreck" and "surveillance" (cheers, Shacknews). The crash happens in such a way that you can't just hit the 'easy' button to try it again. The cars can be quite slow and the vehicles are short, but they also have the ability to crash. If you wreck someone, your car might crash. This sort of is just a race through a scene where the driver crash and you lose all the cars, except for a couple of players.
Although it's not the hottest game of the moment, the low-impact car-bombers and high-powered cars should add some excitement to the game. If you're interested in driving an arcade version of the game, be sure to check out its cabinet of exclusives--a Sega Saturn arcade game featuring multiple players was released in the past.
Like many arcade racing games, Daytona USA will have one player who goes against a set track, with a few things in between. Like in other arcade racers, you'll have the option to use the traditional off-the-road controls that are found in arcade racing games--pressing down on the right thumbstick will automatically zoom in to your race car.
The 16-bit version of the game comes packing six-player multiplayer with two players on the Game Boy Advance. Unfortunately, the Game Boy Advance version isn't as popular as the Sega Saturn game, which is a shame because it seems to have found its own audience. In the Game Boy Advance version, the two players on the same cart can race simultaneously. The game plays exactly like the Sega Saturn game, with all the same cars and tracks that will be found in the game. The game even lets you customize your vehicle by tweaking the parts and gear, which should add to the appeal. The control is a simple--yet addictive--one-button affair. You'll accelerate with the shoulder buttons and brake with the X and square buttons, respectively. The use of the shoulder buttons gives you some control over the speed and the direction of your vehicle. The speed controls are basic, so you'll have to be more careful when getting a car in front of you. Your car will automatically accelerate when you're close to it, which is used to avoid collisions. The game's graphics will let you see all the paths you're racing through. You'll find a nice collection of new cars and tracks, as well as some new cars to play with. The game's audio will be coming together nicely for the current set of issues plaguing the Dreamcast version.
While the game's single-player game is quite promising, the real star of the show is its multiplayer mode. Here, you'll be able to compete in split-screen multiplayer to earn cash, which will let you purchase cars, or you can take one of the free tracks you've unlocked in the game and go online. While the online gameplay will be getting slightly tweaked, the actual online gameplay will be a good mix of the old and the new. The game will support up to four players over a split screen. If you're playing on the PC, you'll find that the default configuration is fairly accommodating, but the Xbox game will set you back $29.99. However, if you're looking to go online and take on other people, the Xbox version of the game will offer downloadable content packs that will let you purchase cars, cars, tracks, and music.
With the online mode, you'll be able to take on others by using a lobby system. You'll be able to play with your buddies over the Xbox Live communicator, which will let you chat with each other. Your friends will be able to access your car-selection menu, which lets you set up their current list of games, race online, and even chat with you through headset. You'll also be able to customize the controls and the visuals in the game, which offer a nice touch.
You'll be able to take your cars online and take on other players in a series of races.
The game's control is still coming together, and the arcade game controls were tightened up after we tried it out. The Xbox controller is a nice addition, and it works well and is responsive. When you first pick up the game, you'll find that it is a bit difficult to pick up and play due to the small size of the track. While it's nice that you can toggle off the controller's tilt functionality, we found that it took a bit of getting used to. The racing controls are tight and responsive, and we found it easy to get used to them.
