Hellboy
Hellboy made its first big appearance at this year's X Factor conference, where EA made some cool stuff about Unreal Tournament. It's now out on GameSpot, and it looks to be a game that will help the Daredevil fan base get more out of the comic book. We were able to check out a level that takes place in an old mansion where our hero has a really big problem. You're out on a mission to stop an army of demons from killing you. However, that's not all. You'll encounter some humans with the help of Psylocke, a magic-using humanoid creature. You'll be able to fight your way through some of the more creative levels that will be found in the game.
Hellboy will support the GameCube controller by using the analog sticks and the X button. The game will feature a full arsenal of weapons and will feature destructible environments. You can also ride a bike, which can be ridden at speeds over the level, which will help you move through the environment. The game will feature a full mix of hand-to-hand melee combat and a variety of different fighting styles. You'll be able to customize your character's attacks with a wide variety of weapon types. You'll be able to choose your melee combat style (pistol, ax, fist, and mace, as well as katanas), as well as weapons (a katana, lance, and shotgun). The game will feature a three-chapter story, which is told through text and speech. Each chapter will feature the expected assortment of puzzles and quick-time events that will reward you with experience, like finding the gold suit for Sir Arthur's suit.
The graphics in the game are an improvement over the previous game, thanks to a flurry of HD high-resolution textures and enhanced particle effects. The levels feature huge amounts of detail that let us appreciate the finer details of Arthur's sword, as well as the odd critter on occasion that looks like he's hiding in the midst of a nice set of snow. The characters have also been upgraded some, thanks to the inclusion of well-drawn 2D animation for the characters. You'll notice that Arthur's facial expressions look a lot more realistic, as well. Arthur's facial features now feature longer hair and a more detailed facial expression, which gives him a more accurate look as he swings and moves. At the same time, some of his own wrinkles and facial features have been improved, though, as are some of the creatures you'll be battling on your quest.
The animation in the game has seen a few improvements since we last saw it last. The animation in the game has been improved to match the new graphics. For example, the fast-moving foes you'll be facing have been polished up to look good. The action will still play out a bit differently as well, thanks to a fresh camera that shifts the view to a third-person behind-the-back perspective. The game has also seen a bit of fine-tuning to ensure that the various attacks are a bit more complex. The game will feature more complex combos that require you to chain together attacks in a particular order. You'll also be able to execute combo moves, which are essentially the game's special moves.
For a taste of the game's visuals, check out the latest issue of Game Informer, which was on hand for the first time. The game is looking solid and maintains a strong frame rate. You'll see all of the high-polygonal environments and characters you'd expect to see in a traditional hack-and-slash game. The environments we saw offered a good mix of linear level design, a slick mix of indoor and outdoor environments, and some slightly smaller outdoor levels that showed off some cool lighting effects. The indoor areas featured slick, lighting effects that helped lend the environments a slick look. You'll find a generous helping of locales, although they're definitely not as expansive as they could be. The outdoor environments sport an impressive mix of locales, such as a forested area and a camp of assorted foes. You'll see the occasional flashpoint you'll see, such as small puzzle pieces that have to be cracked and triggered by jumping into them. Finally, the outdoor levels had some interesting design that showcased some interesting designs. You'll see ruined buildings, ruined temples, and lush tropical locales that showed off a nice variety of effects. The locales we saw were an interesting mix of indoor and outdoor environments, although they were still fairly linear. You'll find some interactivity here and there as well. Besides the standard messages that appear in cinematics and assorted messages, some of the other assorted bits and pieces will include messages you'll find on your travels and items you'll be able to open. The most significant bit of the gameplay is the exploration and puzzle-solving, which is an interesting new addition.
The visuals in the game have gotten a nice upgrade from the rough-and-ready Xbox Live demo we played.
