Hardwood Spades
Hardwood Spades is a rather standard case of a PC game, but with a brand new engine for the engine, the developers at Hardwood seem to be making a huge leap forward from the 2D sidescroller genre. While the levels are fairly easy to see in the screenshots, the game's colorful look will attract plenty of hardcore players to play, as well as those who take a different approach to the game's extremely challenging gameplay.
Hardwood Spades is a side-scrolling action game that features three playable characters - Lan, Garret, and Evelyn - in a quest to prevent the life of the clock, by any means necessary. Each of the characters has their own special abilities, some are much more powerful than others, and some require you to spend some of your money to gain the abilities necessary to do so. If you manage to collect enough gold and progress through the game's single-player mode, you can also purchase upgrades to your character that will allow for additional levels of play. Unfortunately, the game's six-button control scheme isn't very intuitive at all, as it can sometimes be a little tricky to get the hang of.
Although Hardwood Spades features the same game play as Metal Slug, the game's graphics and sound are very different. The single-player game feels very much like Metal Slug, with a huge emphasis on action and tactical strategy.
There's more on the PS2 version of the game, but this time the game is played entirely with the Sixaxis. The PlayStation 2 version sports a slightly improved look that makes the action more challenging, but it still retains the series' feel. In the original Metal Slug, you'd use the analog stick to move your character around, and you could run around and perform a variety of actions using the Sixaxis. In this version of the game, however, the game plays much more like Metal Slug than Metal Slug. There's a lot more action onscreen than you might expect, and you'll see every little thing you do onscreen at once.
Metal Slug 3 is shaping up to be an extremely well-rounded package that is very different from its predecessor. While the basic gameplay has remained intact, we're very happy to report that the graphics have been given a huge boost to make the game look that much better. The game's level designs are very impressive, with the series' excellent boss fights and a host of new enemy designs showing off some great level design. In terms of the graphics, Metal Slug 3 still has some work to do, but it seems like it has paid off in the visual department. The game features an impressive amount of detail that is complemented by a host of effects. Metal Slug 3's graphics, such as the water on the downed enemy's back, have received an upgrade, which helps in making the environments look much more detailed. While the game still offers some rough spots, it seems like it has kept the improvements in terms of visuals.
The audio is still as solid as ever, although it's not quite as polished as what you'd find in Metal Slug: The 2nd Runner. You'll hear the classic Metal Slug tunes, but it's not quite as strong. The sounds of the game, such as the lasers used in the stages, will also be heard. Additionally, there will be some new additions to the audio mix. For example, there are now themes that sound like they were recorded for the game, and they all sound great. The game will feature the voice of Geist, who is pretty impressive, although we'll have to wait and see what his performance is before we get to play as the grizzled gunslinger.
The game's control has been tightened up a bit to make it more accessible. You'll be able to play the game with a standard joystick or the PlayStation 2 pad. The game's two control sticks can be used to control the characters' guns, and the face buttons will let you aim your weapon.
The graphics are looking sharp.
The audio is shaping up pretty well. The graphics in the game feature a nice mix of old and new. You'll see the obligatory assortment of orchestrated tunes that fit in with the game's tone and mood. The voice acting is good and includes a wide assortment of voices that will offer you a nice amount of variety. The audio is staying true to the experience as well, with the game's eclectic cast of sound effects staying true to their respective console counterparts. The effects are looking good and feature a great deal of variety.
Based on what we played, Red Faction: Armageddon is shaping up to be an impressive action game that's shaping up to be one of the more interesting games for the PlayStation 3 this holiday season. The gameplay tweaks and additions we've seen have proven to be a welcome addition to the package and should keep the experience fresh. The game's visuals, which, while not a total flop, are shaping up to be a great addition to the package.
