Guitar Hero 2 Modified
Guitar Hero 2 Modified (opens in new tab)allows players to import the original Music Studio - essentially, players can customise and personalise their own tracks. You can have your game soundtrack start from scratch, customise the interior lighting, and even equip special songs to your main instrument with various makeovers. Set for release on Oct. 6, Guitar Hero 2 is a sequel to the landmark soundtrack released in 2007. The game features 11 different music tracks from the original trilogy including "Red Hot Chili Peppers" by bands such as World's Best, "F*ck Woman" by Guns N' Roses, "Bustside Slasher" by The Strokes, and "Into the Saddle" by Kendrick Lamar. The game also features a similar game creation tool as its predecessor and allows you to create your own track in any of the available venues and the many permutations of all your favourite characters. The game's finished release will include support for the Rock Band system and includes new trophies, video clips, and guitar controllers.
Because many of the Guitar Hero games are being built for traditional instruments, there are no additional peripherals available. Instead, Guitar Hero 2 offers a comprehensive suite of chord and keyboard accessories for your Xbox 360. Players can grab a guitar controller, a microphone, and a guitar and create their own instruments and accessories for the game. But not all of these devices will work with the Xbox 360 version of the game. Guitar Hero 2 on the other hand features four peripherals--the new GH2 guitar, the GH2 guitar, the GH2 controller, and the GH2 guitar--to choose from. When the game releases, Guitar Hero 2 will also support the Xbox 360 version of the game's drum kit and guitar controllers. The GH2 guitar will also have an advanced drum kit and guitar controller that features a built-in mic for easy access.
Since the game's release, we've also been able to play with a pair of headphones and microphone for some of the more peripheral-dependent features of the game. We were able to get our hands on a few of the additional peripherals, and while none of them are as great as the three above, we have been able to use the console game's drum kit and microphone for other games. We have also been able to play with a handful of other instruments that will be available in the game. The most intriguing part of the drum kit is the new bass guitar, which is reminiscent of the current James Bond movie. While the guitar is quite simplistic in terms of controls and flexibility, it does offer a decent amount of depth when playing with a controller. We're also happy to report that, thanks to the many game-specific features, there's not a ton of peripheral confusion when it comes to gameplay. The most interesting aspect of the controller is the directional pad that features two buttons and a d-pad, which is perfect for those who prefer to play with one hand and the other's one-handed.
The other gameplay element that has caught our eye is the game's wireless capability. When you're playing a rhythm game, it can be easy to get caught up in having to perform button presses at a time, but it can be downright daunting when trying to find the right timing to get the best possible combo. When playing with a controller, the most noticeable area of worry for players is with the game's online play. Since we're used to having people join together at arcade games and only have one controller, we didn't feel any need to get up and take turns putting the game on the Xbox 360 controller to compete.
Some of the game's controls were a bit more complicated than we'd anticipated. Like in the last game, you have to hold down the L1 button and use your Wii Remote to pull up a special attack. You can also move the Wii Remote or Wii Remote with the B button, though you'll need to think of the other way around. The Wii Remote will vibrate when you're playing in either direction, and depending on your position, the game will do a little dance of sorts. The "ring" mode is similar to what we've seen in previous versions of the game, but it's a completely different experience. In this mode, your job is to get the combos to take place. You'll see a target-specific bar in the lower-left corner of the screen and you need to do this quickly before your meter runs out. In the ring you can look at the other end of the bar to see where you're going to strike and when you need to get out of your ring. In addition, if you tap the A button to take your opponent out, you'll be able to lock on to the opponent and hold the A button for a bit. Finally, in this mode, you'll be able to perform special moves by pressing A while you're in a ring.
