Freestyle
Freestyle BMX could probably be better, but it’s been pretty much a staple of the sport since it was first introduced. Rocker Busters was all about pulling off tricks in a simple manner. It was one of the first BMX games that showed what could be done with a licensed sports engine.
Now you’ve got Freestyle BMX – and that’s something that should come as no surprise. It’s a combination of high-flying, grind-smoothing, and ragdoll stunts that made us sick when the first bikes came out.
So let’s take a look at some of the changes we can expect in the game.
New gameplay is something you can really notice if you’re familiar with the sport of motocross. To pull off an extreme move, you’ll need to land in a position of relative relative safety, making it difficult to get the jump on the ground. This will often be the case with Dave Mirra’s most impressive stunt: collecting five gems in a row to find out the location of the last gem.
Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to perform a couple of spins with your bike. Tapping the R2 button will release your bike, and holding the R2 button will make the right analog stick turn. We like the idea of this as a competition for your perfect stunt, but we’d like to see more elaborate stunts. As with motocross, you’ll need to take a close-up view of your bike to see your position on the track. To pull off a move, simply hold the R2 button while you bike is accelerating to avoid the direction you need to go to hit the spot. You’ll need to get a good angle in to hit the drift in the distance, so just let it move.
As you’ve probably already guessed, these are all variations of the basic bike. There are 14 variations of the bike, which all come with their own unique, stylized designs. In addition to the standard bikes, you’ll also be able to use the other bikes as obstacles.
Although we had a few issues with the bike’s design in our recent hands-on session with MotoGP 18, we found that it just felt really good to use. Whether you want to hit the bends on the throttle, or climb on the mud, or run off-road, there are enough variations to keep you on your toes.
If you want to have a handle on the ground, the R2 is a really satisfying way to do it. Using the Circle Pad at full speed on the left analog stick is great, and this new take on the bike will help you stay behind you for as long as you need it to. For experienced riders, this is particularly true if you’re racing the track at full speed.
A dedicated A2 button is used to steer the bike, but this can be a bit fiddly to press. You can also tilt the bike further back when you have the rear tires covered, but we found the rear tires could be a bit too tight for our liking. It’s a small touch, but a nice touch that should make it easier to control your riding position on the track.
The bike’s audio is a little disappointing, given that the Spirit range of the Arc is already stellar. But the voice is a solid overall experience, and you will hear that when you get up to speed. It can be controlled by a set of stereo speakers, but you may not need to own the company’s audio gearbox.
The automatic gearing system works well with the majority of bike gear, and you’ll soon find that its excellent range is impressive. There’s no shortage of activity, and there are plenty of smooth turning sections to hit. If you do decide to use the e-bike as a left-to-right exercise bike, you’ll see a lot of detail, and you can even see the shafts on the handlebars and saddlebags.
The battery feels light to ride, and you can opt to strap it up for outdoor cycling, or charge it at a night ride if you’re a little less prone to working out. The rear hub motor is quiet too, allowing you to get more power from the e-bike’s battery.
This isn’t the best choice for working out, but you can easily change this setting when cycling or out of the bike. You can also tweak the power to charge the battery quite easily, if you prefer.
The main difference between the Aerobino and other electric bikes is that you don’t have to worry about having a battery from your bike, as the Aerobino is on hand in the box.
