Family Tales: The Sisters of War is a mix of exploration and role-playing and combines the developer's art and unique aesthetic to create a compelling adventure.

The game follows a young girl named Tippi as she explores a haunted island, in which she will need to solve a series of puzzles that involve puzzles that can only be solved by solving timed-wave puzzles. Each puzzle is an adventure, and each one contains a certain poem that has the ability to change Tippi's appearance, or change his appearance. Tippi will also encounter a group of spectral creatures that will ask you to solve puzzles. The puzzles and characters of Family Tales: The Sisters of War are inspired by the Myst and Freaks from the same game.

The game has a color-coded box art that is designed to resemble a real notebook. The world of the game is divided into a number of levels, with a few levels dedicated to more cerebral puzzles and solutions. There are three types of puzzle: soul-searching, word search, and memorysearching. The soul-searching is a roundabout type of puzzle that appears onscreen to find a set amount of objects that you can interact with. For example, a black soul will appear onscreen when you click on a black soul, while a black soul will appear onscreen when you click on a black soul, and a white soul will appear when you click on a black soul. Each of these modes of puzzles will have multiple solutions. For example, if you want to take a white soul, you'll need to find four black soul housings with a "look" button. However, if you want to use a soul mirror on a black soul, you'll need to find two black soul housings, which may sound like a lot, but the spirit housings themselves are colored differently. Each ghost will disappear after 20 seconds, and they'll appear in a separate room until you reach them, thus wasting time.

This section covers puzzles that you'll have to solve in the game. Some of these puzzles are unique, but we'll come to them in later sections.

Gravity Mario, the next area, has a locked door. You have to grab the key by touching it, which will open a door, which will also require some soul. That's it; grab the key in the middle of the level to open the doors, then jump to the platform above you. You'll need to tilt the control stick in the opposite direction of the switch to raise the platform, then jump up to the platform above you. You'll notice that there are four switches inside the new platform. You'll need to flip the switch twice to open the door; with the first switch, you'll jump across to the platform below you, then use the two switches on the other side of the door to flip them up again.

This Whisper will allow you to make it across the screen.

Head back to the first Whisper. There's another locked door here; smash it to reach a hidden area. Head into the room with the gravity gun, grab the blue star there, then switch to the engine control to activate the elevator here.

Head through the white door. You'll be out on the bottom level, but as soon as you return to the planet, you'll notice a group of pirates coming your way. You'll need to activate the engines first; you'll know you're in a tight spot when you see your ship wheel rolling out of the ground. Hit the three switches here and head back to the main part of the screen, which has morphed into a circular room with the yellow boost block and a lever. You need to push these switches until you reach the power station that you haven't been seeing yet. Doing so will cause a platform to descend from the lower level. Kill the pirates here, then find the Time Device in the middle of the room and hit the lever. Ride it down, then go into the ship to flip the platforms again. Eventually the platform will stop and let you move on.

Reach the blue boost ball here. There are four total platforms to jump through here. There's a pair of balls with red locks on them, but first, jump up to the right and use your white ball to jump to the platforms that lead to the Power Station. There's another ball here with three locks on it. Ride the platform up, then jump to the platform on the right, and jump over to the yellow ball here. That will activate a timer that has opened up, so you'll have to try it again before the timer expires. With that done, you'll be able to return to the Power Station and flip the platforms.

From here, you can use your ball to hit the blue, red, and green balls here to move on. The controls for these platforms are the same as the ones in the final room, save for one.
