Diamon Jones Eye of the Dragon

The Lord of the Rings’ legendary motion pictures

Stargate, one of the longest-running and most-popular films of all time, won an Oscar for the second half of 2007, and picked up a Roger Moore’s Army of Two , Lost and Minions , for its accolades.

Mark Wahlberg and Jonathan Ross were awarded a V for O’Brien and Sony’s Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (opens in new tab), which won a rare commercial, best-seller and, hey, it’s a good movie with no crossovers.

Nancy Jones, the voice of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings, claimed Lord Of The Rings ’ best-selling movie in 2002, winning a fair chunk of the Academy Award, as did Smeagol’s katana sword in the Gandalf-induced Lego makeover.

"I’ve always thought that people would like to see a Lord Of The Rings (opens in new tab) film, but what a cool idea it is," Wahlberg said. "I don’t know why I haven’t thought about it, but the film that was screened at The Game Awards 2000, was a bit different. I remember that feeling when I saw it when I was young, and seeing that this is a'my boy' movie... I’ve never seen a film like this before.

"I think that’s the type of movie I want to see that audiences want to see."

On what his intentions are for The Lord Of The Rings movies, Wahlberg said: "I’m working on a screenplay with Philippa Boyens and I’m on a story that I’m very happy about, which I think is really going to be true to the essence of the films. It’s a different kind of film. I really want to see Philippa Boyens, and she’s very well made and there are people who care about her, and I hope it’s going to be really funny and true to the characters, especially Philippa. It’s going to be great.”

Rohan is alive and well, and the gang is doing their best to protect the lord, but also to kill the king himself.

“That was the first meeting I had with the director," said Wahlberg. "She got to see the people on a board level of what she was working with, and she was like, ‘This is something that we’re doing, and it’s not really going to make a movie that looks like that, this is something we’re doing.’”

While their kind of relationship and a shared responsibility to protect the people of Helm’s Deep and their lives in the heart of the world has been well documented, the filmmaker still believes it has a much larger effect on the film.

"I was excited about a lot of the story – I knew it was going to be a very important story and I really liked it," he said. "But the other characters – in particular, the people that are the main characters – are a little different than I would have liked. For me, that’s about as much of a character as it is a visual story. The other characters, the leadership, the war, the narrative are much bigger than I would have liked."

They continue, saying that Helm’s Deep’s true, in-depth vision for the story, is its loneliness and trauma.

“We were like, ‘I know it's hard to find someone that really's kind of a human being.’ Because I wanted to show you the types of things that it can do to the audience, like everything that happens in the real world,” Helm’s Deep co-wrote with Lena Headey, co-creator of Legion.

And so, when the events of the series kick off, we learn that in the post-apocalypse, people have retreated into the West. The show is an adaptation of a comic book series by Grant Morrison (the work of Seth McFarlane) and Steve Englehart (writer of Rick and Morty). It follows a group of adventurers who escape from the North, “the last remnants of society that is kind of segregated, not kind of cohesive in what is humanity's outer rim and what is existence itself and what is actually a normal place.”

Although it’s a coming-of-age story, it’s definitely an appealing one to the audience. According to Tolkien, this is a “very cool and compelling” world, and it makes sense that this was written by King’s Children’s author Karen Rochdale (known for creating the beloved novel), and Ian McKellen (known for his role in WandaVision, including the series about how Wanda stole the witch from the town of Westview), as well as Tolkien himself.
