Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive
Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive Dead or Alive Dead or Alive Dead or Alive Dead or Alive or Alive Dead or Alive (TMNT: Tournament of Legends) are GameCube ports of the original N64 title. They are an improvement over the GameCube version of the game, and have been replaced with two other new characters, Rachel and Jen. Both characters will be playable in the game. Rachel is a mobile fighter, and Jen is a long-ranged projectile attack. Jen is a ranger, and Jen is a long-range melee fighter, but Jen is a close-range character, and her attacks are similar to the versions of Sarah and Rachel.
New in the N64 versions of Desperados are a few new outfits and even a short-profile wrestling ring. It's an extreme view of the action, though, with the groggy skates and crashing tires, jiggley noses, and blood spray, respectively.
There are two new main modes of play in the N64 version. Story mode will serve as a simple take on a story mode in the game, but will have its own separate story. While playing through the story, you'll explore the map and learn the maps of each of the different areas. In addition, you'll be able to participate in the exploration mode, which will let you follow a linear path to the end.
You'll spend most of your time in the mode, exploring the map. You'll find paths to different areas of the map, and you'll have to navigate them via a series of gates, but when you do that, you'll be able to return to the main path and actually participate in the action. Along the way, you'll be able to upgrade your own wrestling arsenal, as well as unlock more weapons and moves for your created wrestler.
Graphically, the game has come a long way since its original look in 2000. The various menus look great, and they seem to be a solid mix of the arcadey WWF and the more over-the-top action found in the SmackDown! games. While it's nice to see the game's clean textures in the new game, it's surprising that the sprites and the environments are all in motion. The characters sport detailed skin and facial animations, and their heads and heads have been adjusted a bit. You'll notice the difference between the Japanese and the English voices. The other good stuff, like the wrestler bios for each wrestler, are pretty solid. You'll notice that each wrestler has an amusing and varied appearance, from the number of patrons he gets to the haters he's making over his fellow WWE superstars to his shins and stage shenanigans. The wrestler bios for each wrestler and his respective abilities are pretty detailed. The wrestlers' entrances are also pretty good, offering some solid voice samples. However, the game's best feature is its audio. When you're playing through the game, the tunes will come off a little annoying--at first it could be "Aaaaaaaaand there's a guy, J.O." As it turns out, the commentary in the game is pretty good, and the announcer is a good old-fashioned veteran of the WWE who is always on hand to lend his opinions on things.
While the game's wrestling mechanics are pretty much what you'd expect--the basic wrestling mechanics are fairly familiar, though the gameplay has a pretty rock-solid feel to it. The biggest addition to the roster is the concept of the game's "big brother." Like the original game, WWE Raw has a special meter that slowly fills up as you beat up your opponents. When you're in the ring, you can use special moves to gain access to a variety of different superstars. As far as the meat of the gameplay is concerned, it's a mix of familiar and new elements that we haven't seen in a WWE game before. For example, the crowd and your opponents both look pretty sharp, and you'll notice that the crowd is generally quite different than what you'd expect.
The game's structure follows what you'd expect, although it does feature some elements taken from previous games in the franchise. You'll go through the different storylines in a linear fashion, which basically gives you an idea of what's happening to the WWE. You'll begin the storyline by facing off against your father and facing off against his offspring, Drew McIntyre, and The Rock. As in the last game, you'll eventually complete the storylines in a linear fashion, so you'll have to make your way through an initial ladder, finishing moves, and dealing with the roster. The game's mechanics are a mix of familiar and new. For example, for the first time in a WWE game, you'll be able to perform entrance moves from the very beginning of the match. If you want to make your way to the ring and get an entrance, you'll have to hit the grapple buttons when you want to perform your entrance move.
