Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes, Relic's long-running WWII RTS, is set to be published by THQ, and the game is set to take advantage of the company's new and more powerful hardware, specifically the ATI Radeon X2 graphics. Company of Heroes has been a mainstay in the PC gaming market since its release in 2005. The game allows you to play as one of four Allied, Chinese, German, and American forces, and each of the four nations has distinct strengths and weaknesses. This is a new technology system that takes advantage of the ATI hardware, which is designed to provide real-time feedback on war situations. For example, if you win a firefight, you'll hear real-time speech from your commanders and generals on the battlefield. The AI will react accordingly to a fight.
As a commander, you'll also have the ability to call in air strikes, although this type of gameplay doesn't always translate well to fighting over heavily defended areas. This is because most of the game's battles are set on either close-quarter trenches or narrow, exposed bridges that give each side the opportunity to get in a more tactical position. While the game's heavy emphasis is on combat and infantry tactics, there are still moments when you can still kill. For instance, during one of the early engagements with British and American troops, we were able to kill a German infantryman and steal the armored soldier's uniform. While this didn't work out the way we wanted to, it was still possible for us to get the dogs of war to follow the American orders. Once they saw that our commanders and generals were on the ground, they proceeded to execute the German tanks on the American side of the map. Once the Axis was done with capturing a German base, we could call in artillery strikes. This made the enemy attack any good, and it also caused the enemy infantrymen to take several steps away from our position.
We also wanted to see if the British could use the heavy-duty units on the British side of the map in the form of armor, artillery, and mounted machine guns. After all, it was a point of no return if you did not have a heavy-duty tank equipped. However, after all the historical battles and the Soviets, we're happy to see that we could go back to the days when the American forces were largely outfitted with their own specialized air support. By spending a bit of time on the French side of the map, we could have a much larger presence on the Axis side. And finally, as we discovered, when we finally were able to control the French forces, we could have a very different experience. It is very difficult to win in the traditional manner of having your men fighting together, because it is extremely difficult for the Germans to build air defenses against enemy infantry. In addition, infantry aren't generally the smartest units, and they tend to cause headaches for infantry and vehicle unit personnel. To help counter this, we had a Sherman tank among the slow-moving, medium-sized infantry that we had created. The Sherman tank had the advantage of being a mobile anti-tank unit, but it was extremely tough to use in the short time we had to learn how to use it. As such, we have to learn to play smart with the different German units, and we often find that it is sometimes impossible to play smart with the Germans in one of the early maps. As such, we decided to include a more advanced model of the tank in the early parts of the game.
Battlefield 1942 won several awards at E3, including best single-player game, Best multiplayer gameplay, Best computer game, and best online multiplayer game.
When we finished the game's story, we realized that the most important change that players needed to remember was that the game was now scheduled for release in October of 1942. What was the team's top priority, and what were some of the challenges it had been implementing during the game's development?
Toward the end of our development of Battlefield 1942, we decided to include four main single-player campaign modes: Dogfight, Frontline, Domination, and Deathmatch. We wanted to give players something that was new and something that really wasn't possible in other FPS games. We asked ourselves if we could combine two modes, and we responded with "Yes." It turns out that our next mode was a Battle of the Bulge mode. Dogfight is an intense single-player game set in the trenches of Germany, where German soldiers try to stop a German army from launching an attack on the French countryside. The mode supports up to 64 players over a LAN or Internet connection. The game features a huge variety of weapons and vehicles, including jeeps, tanks, and a huge variety of destructive weapons that players can use to destroy enemy aircraft or vehicles.
One of the most exciting elements of Battlefield 1942 is the environment. This is the first time that we have implemented an environment that was never seen before in the Battlefield games.
