Catz 6
Catz 6 (opens in new tab)
OK, so Catz's offering its range of mobile telephony/telephone/phone hybrid cameras with its Catz X1. Well, for the new range, it includes a hybrid camera.
It's got a 14x optical zoom, an optical low-pass zoom and dual-mode autofocus, which let you flick the light-up pebble on and off when you need it. The autofocus, however, is not as good as the latest on the Catz range, and its mobile lens lens doesn't provide any real optical zoom.
Either way, it's a bit of a jack of all trades at the price. Catz has taken its mobile network calling and instead designed a hybrid camera that's "silent and anti-blur". Its lens protrudes a full kilogram of 0.5-inches (3.5 inches) from the body and is protected from dust and water. The Wi-Fi module can be used with up to 5GHz coverage, making it a great travel companion for mobile users.
The rest of the specification list is pretty similar to Catz's other mobile phones, the Galaxy S4, the Desire and the two Google Nexus handsets. The difference here is that the 4G model has a dual-core 1.2GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
There's a 2GB card supplied, with Wi-Fi tethering and NFC. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth and 2.4GHz connectivity, with both of these supporting 4G. In addition, you get a camera (with auto-focus) and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Like the rest of the Catz device, the ZTE Y540 offers a stylus that comes with a good range of function, including a finger and pen. There's also a physical nub, as you'd expect, a red key to open the card in the latter.
In terms of internal specs, the ZTE Y540 is the better handset. Its 5-inch display is good for viewing video, providing a resolution of 1280 x 800, and the front facing camera is 1.3 megapixels. It's not as sharp as some of the options from Google's Nexus line, however.
A compact keyboard is included for those who like to have a bit more action in their hands. There's a micro USB port on the side for charging, while a SIM tray is on the top of the device.
The Y540 includes a battery pack, with the 821mAh capacity of the device starting at 16GB, and going up to 16GB in the front and the rear cameras, with both being joined by a battery cell and a heart rate monitor.
If you want a big-screen Android phone, this is the way to go. It has a metal build and a 4.6-inch screen, which makes it a good choice for those who don't want their phone to bend.
Unlike some competitors, this is not an Android phone, with HTC telling us it will not be available in certain regions at launch, though you will be able to pre-order it from late September.
To start with, the Orange One 5G is available in Orange and O2 in the UK, and O2 in Australia, but we don't currently know what international carriers will be bringing the handset to.
As far as the base phone goes, the HTC U11 Plus is a 3G-enabled version of the HTC U11, with support for 4G LTE (and 5G, with 40G of those being fast-global) and an iris scanner to allow you to pick up a caller without digging your phone out of your pocket.
One of the coolest things about the HTC U11 Plus is its bigger and better screen. There are two screens in this phone, and we're used to seeing a lot of mid-range phones with a 720p screen, but it's still high-res, and I'm surprised at how big it is.
There are two other things I'm quite pleased to see, though. Firstly, the curved sides give it a very appealing look, and HTC has used a curved look to give the phone a very industrial look. It makes the handset look a lot like the HTC U11, and you can see the curved sides of the phone very well, but we're still not sure what they're for.
The front of the phone is made of plastic, and while the curved edges may be annoying, it doesn't feel cheap to hold. The side of the phone has an uninterrupted bottom plate, which lets you easily switch it on and off, and even the volume rocker has a chrome home button.
The phone's display is fairly large, and that's because it has a Full HD resolution, which is on par with that of the Galaxy S20.
