Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut
Broken Sword - Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut has come and gone, and we found the adventure to be quite good. While it's still regarded as one of the best point-and-click adventure games ever made, it may well have been more like the modern incarnation of the venerable Sierra adventure games from the '90s.
Our newest episode, The Director's Cut, focuses on the narrative of the game, in which the story starts off with the king's reign at his palace. The king, played by Justin Timberlake, is enjoying his time with your very own pen and paper. Your work is essentially done, and by using your creative skills to solve puzzles and move around the world, you will be able to learn new techniques, develop new skills, and gain new and better abilities. And it's worth it.
As the master of the human arts, Justin's technology is capable of pushing some pretty imposing structures. He uses his stunning origami-esque scale to sketch around in the corners of the globe, and his tools include colored pencils and paintbrush pens. For instance, his deck of spinner pens can bend these wooden objects so that they're illuminated. Others such as a cat pen can lift weights to provide access to various areas and, in a nod to Rayman, a fish's paw can dig down holes in the ground for you to drop from. You'll also be able to draw tools such as pencils and paintbrush pens, as well as all manner of parallax-based instruments.
The game will feature an interesting story and plenty of historical and cultural background information. We were given a preview code of the game so that we could get an idea of what the story is, and then when we got to play, it was immediately clear that the game would not only be about a young pirate named Elvis Armitage, but also about his quest for revenge. Armitage's tale is broken up into a few chapters, and they'll take you through the process of Armitage's theft, following the downfall of his brother Charles the Black, and the ensuing battle between the three wealthy individuals in the world. You'll find that a lot of the story will unfold in the game, from his interactions with his family, to some of the major plot developments that you'll experience.
You'll be forced to steal and fight in a large war, so you'll need to learn the skills and strengths of the military in order to make the most of your foes. You'll be able to do so in a number of different ways. For instance, you'll be able to fight your way through the military as a infantryman, but you'll be able to attack any time you want, thanks to the game's ability to constantly offer you different options when dealing with enemy soldiers.
Your primary weapon during your missions will be a rifle that fires optical camouflage. In addition to the standard scope and zoom features of the game's other guns, you'll find a number of pistols, grenades, and other types of weapons. You'll even find a grenade launcher that will let you lock on to targets, and you'll also be able to carry a pair of binoculars for you to use in surveillance, which can be useful when looking to avoid firefights. You'll also be able to use your night vision ability when scouting, which will help you find your way around the battlefield undetected.
Of course, you'll need to keep an eye on your health, and if you're not careful, you'll suffer a pretty severe wound. We saw one soldier carrying a submachine gun while we were in the midst of battle, and in another, he also suffered a serious wound from a turret that, when pulled back to fire, could incapacitate enemies in a single hit if fired on. Other soldiers in the game will have heavy ammo drops, so you'll be able to use their ranged weapons, such as shotguns and assault rifles, to reload or get in close.
The game will also have some pretty standard squad-based missions. One mission had us commanding four infantry units, all of which had their own unique personalities. The purpose of the mission was to repel an assault from an anti-air base that occupied its main headquarters, and it involved rescuing the prisoners. The controls were pretty standard for a first-person shooter, and we found that we could do a lot more than just move around the environment. This meant that we could try out new weapons, such as rocket launchers and grenades. There were also plenty of scripted events that we didn't want to repeat in the game, so we could try to think of ways to make the game replayable. For instance, we could start an ambush on an enemy base and either rush into the base, or wait to get inside. We could then use this opportunity to get behind the base and use our limited resources to make sure that a security guard stayed there.
