ARMA 2
ARMA 2 isn't the only game using a World War II setting. With its much-anticipated military tactics sequel set to make a splash at E3 this May, Bohemia Interactive is stepping up its assault on next-generation consoles with ARMA 2. The developer also plans to release ARMA 2 with both a single-player campaign and a multiplayer component. We saw a couple of video trailers at E3, and the differences in performance on both consoles seem to be mostly cosmetic.
We took an early look at the graphics engine in this new game. In the trailer we saw a slight boost in real-time lighting effects that made things very realistic. The scene in the trailer was on a modified Arma 2 tropical island, and our view was very different than in the original. The sun and the night sky were given a bit of a boost in detail and made the landscape and vegetation look much more alive. As such, it's easy to see the terrain and your squad taking cover and using its "medicine" abilities to take out enemies. We also noticed that the view took on a very different tone in the trailer. This may be because the game is set in a modern-day world, and it's set in the Middle East.
There are three major mission types that you can choose from in the game, and all three of them take place in different areas. In the trailer we saw the same setting as in the original Arma, and it really looked great. The trailer showed off three new missions: USV-1, FOB2, and GAFT-1. The USV-1 mission was a submarine battle that took place in the middle of the world. The GAFT-1 mission takes place in the winter of 1944, and the action takes place in an ocean. The GAFT-1 mission was a more conventional affair, taking place in the mountains and blowing up enemies. The GAFT-1 mission takes place in the day and is set in a futuristic battle, with tanks and helicopters, and it involves heavy machinery that's quite big.
The other two mission types are similar in terms of gameplay. The mission took place in the ruined-out city of San Francisco. There, our goal was to make our way up the list of missions that we were looking for, and that includes the Freedom Fighters mission, which is the GAFT-1 mission that takes place in the "war of terror," and the "humanism of terror" mission that involves destroying an enemy convoy in the near future.
The Freedom Fighters mission took place in the middle of the world. We had to do battle with numerous enemy soldiers. In this mission, we had to take out a special team of three forces on a bridge that was under attack by a squad of four soldiers. The last time we encountered the actual attack, we were actually taken into battle with multiple helicopters. We had to use the heavily armored transports we had in order to quickly transport us to the bridge. After getting past the point, we moved on to the final mission, where we finally got our chance to take out a fleet of rocket-equipped T-50 commandos.
Freedom Fighters is shaping up to be a pretty solid tactical game, with a good variety of missions that aren't too complicated to complete.
The third mission we were shown actually took place in a relatively small island that was roughly a kilometer apart. That means we were able to focus our attention on ground operations, such as defending a bridge as we were trying to take it out. The other mission we were shown featured three missions in which we were controlling a ship that was far and wide in size. The first mission we were shown was called "China Rising," and it takes place on a planet called Rico. The thing about this mission is that it's essentially a series of naval battles in space, as the two sides battle it out in the sky while the outer one is behind it. We actually had a chance to play it during a play session of the game and were impressed by just how much it's been changing up the pacing of the battles.
The final mission we were shown was called "The Empire," and it involves a large fleet of ships and several smaller fighters that are firing at our targets. The game will give you a chance to see exactly what happens during these battles, and you can even do a little bit of research in the missions, which we got to see. We were told that the combat will give you a good sense of how many different types of ships you'll be using in your fleet. The ships will be considerably larger than the fleet of the first game, and they'll use their weapons, which in this case were various flak cannons and heavy weapons.
What we got to see was a series of battles that involved large amounts of movement, making for some interesting clashes. At one point we were chasing down a large ship on the deck of a Terran capital ship, and the ship was just off to the side of the deck.
