Agon The Mysteriou Scodex
Agon The Mysteriou Scodex is a shooter based on the comic-book series of the same name. You play as an inmate from New York who is forced to work with his fellow inmate Jigsaw. One of the first things you'll notice about this game is that it has a very tongue-in-cheek tone and humor that works really well. The comic-book style was used in films such as Robotech, and the puzzles really are pretty clever and entertaining.
If you've played any of the Scodex games, you'll be familiar with the Scodex-like puzzles and weird situations. Scodex 3's structure is very much a puzzle game, with some really tough puzzle-solving elements to keep you engaged. There are over 50 Scodex-filled levels in the game, and the graphics are quite impressive. The game's cutscenes are of much high quality, and the music is suitably cool. The game's sound is solid, and it uses an onscreen ticker to help you sort out your puzzled glasses. The audio in the game is done by Oscar Anderton, who most recently worked on Hitman: Codename 47. The game's soundtrack features some excellent techno, electronic, and some cheesy rock tunes.
We didn't get to play the PlayStation 2 version of the game to see how the game will play on the PlayStation 2, but it's nice to see the game in action. The first few levels we played on offer seemed pretty straightforward, and they actually made for a good way to get used to the PlayStation 2 controls. The control is pretty responsive, and the different controller layouts offer something different from what you might have played on the Xbox. The analog stick lets you move your character around the screen, while the right stick lets you aim your weapons. The D pad is used for walking, crouching, and using items. The triangle button lets you cycle through your available items, which you can then use to finish a level. The R1 button lets you call up an inventory, which is located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. The left analog stick is used for interacting with items, and the right shoulder button lets you switch to one of the game's items. Finally, the face buttons let you switch to a gun or a bomb, which makes for some pretty frantic gameplay. The light trigger lets you toss grenades, which are weapons that will let you deal with any enemies in the game. The L1 button lets you cycle through your inventory by holding down the R1 button. The D pad let you cycle through your inventory, and the L1 button let you select up to two items. The X button lets you cycle through your inventory's items, which are special items you can use in certain areas. The square button lets you select up to three items. The L2 button lets you toggle between your inventory's items. The square button lets you select a magic spell. The square button lets you switch to a weapon. The L2 button lets you pick up items. Finally, the square button lets you perform special attacks. The d-pad lets you activate your special abilities. The face buttons let you access a select number of the 13 magic spells in the game. You'll find three health potions to use in the game, as well as a limited number of armor-boosting talismans you'll earn from destroying monsters.
The graphics in the game are coming together pretty well. The game looks fine and features the standard monster-trading fare, but its cartoony look and animations are a bit rough around the edges. The PlayStation 2 version we've seen has seen some sharp edges. The monsters are a bit more detailed, although they still do a fine job of setting the game's look and feel together. As far as the sound goes, Chaos Rings uses a mix of authentic music and stylized speech from the series' most recognizable cast. You'll hear the familiar assortment of tunes and surly wisecracks you'll hear in the game. The voice acting is good and features some cheesy lines.
Based on what we've played so far, Chaos Rings looks like it will be an entertaining experience. The game's controls work surprisingly well. You'll move your monster with the left analog stick and attack with the right. The A button will let you perform special moves by tapping it. The Y button will let you cycle through your assorted attacks, which vary depending on your foe's level. The triggers will be used to attack. The L trigger will let you perform a double-jump. The X button will let you perform a powerful attack that will yield some very cool results. Finally, the Y button will let you use your special attack when you're in midair. You'll perform a stun attack by pressing the button as often as you want.
Though you'll find the game accommodating to a wide range of players, the core mechanics of the experience are solid.
