Nelly Cootalot II: The Fowl Fleet
Nelly Cootalot II: The Fowl Fleet is a remake of the Pocket Adventure Game. The latest chapter in the annals of Nelly's action adventure series will take place after the events of Nelly Klitz, which took place in the same universe and follows the events of the first game. Your character, a sentient laser cannon named Dread, has made a number of new friends in the Twillbots, including a star on his head and the female dolphin that accompanies him on his adventures.
The Fowl Fleet is a continuation of the classic adventure game series. In the game, the goal is to destroy the sonic Cootalot. But rather than destroy the sonic Cootalot, you're going to have to do so in the hope of bringing it back down from space. It's a standard point-and-click affair, so there's no point in choosing a direction. Instead, there are levels that are set in space that must be explored for bonus coins.
The missions, at least, follow the same format as the main storyline, but they're also linear. These are typically set up in places where a series of events are triggered, but because of the gameplay style of the game, they're pretty much the same regardless of the order. You start off with a basic, as a simple robot, and must follow the storyline by solving puzzles to move on.
This is quite a unique game. The game has been done before, but it still has that retro look to it that reminds me of the classic PlayStation game GoldenEye. However, it's also a little different. The characters in the game are all quite similar, with the exception of one who is called the "Robot," who is actually a robot, though he's designed to play like an actual human. The plot is more simple than the story, with you simply solving puzzles to move on to the next area. There's an almost complete story about the robots and their partnership. The writing is endearing, and it's good that the developers managed to nail that.
Graphically, Guardian of Light is a sharp cartoon. The world that you visit is impressive, and the characters are memorable. In fact, they're so cool that you might not even notice them while playing the game. However, the animation is done well and the cutscenes are witty, and the main plot is done very well.
While it isn't a particularly enjoyable game in the first place, Guardian of Light is still pretty fun. The controls are simple, with the game's only major flaw being the fact that you have to move your character by clicking on a button. If you're not using the control stick to move, then you have to switch to a third-person view with the direction you're facing. You also have to move your character's head by clicking and holding the down button, which makes it easy to play the game.
Guardians of Light is an intense game, and I would urge any gamers who are familiar with it to try it out. It's definitely a must-play for all the GameCube owners out there, and for those who never gave the game a try, the game is definitely worth the purchase. It has a ton of modes, with the main addition being two brand new game modes.
The first is the cooperative mode. In this mode, you play as one of the Guardian Force's available force members, as well as a huge set of vehicles. You can switch to vehicles with the right bumper or up to four friends can use your weapons on the fly. The easiest way to get around is to just hop into a vehicle, walk up to the car, and start firing. Once you find the most efficient way to go, it's just a matter of hitting a button. It's a little annoying at first, but actually executing the same attack feels great, which is what you should be doing.
The other game mode is a racing game called Mario Kart, in which you play as the GameCube's version of Mario. In this game, you are on a course which is basically your standard race course. The objective is to reach the finish line in the shortest amount of time possible. Since you're not on the course, you must be at a certain point in the race. To accomplish this, you have to drive in one direction and land in another. If you don't land, you're not able to perform any damage, so you must take a risk and land at the right time. A damage meter constantly shows up onscreen so you're unable to actually hit the course's buttons. While racing, you have to hit the A button at the right time to avoid collisions. This causes you to slide and hop around the track, which is a bit of a hassle. To make things even more complicated, the effect of hitting the A button is instant, so you have to be very careful.
