Deputy Dangle
Deputy Danglehold is the latest Tom Clancy game to be published by Activision, and it's based on the Clancy novel D.I.C.E. (complete with voice acting by the actor behind the hero). While most games of this type only feature one player playing as a squad leader, Tom Clancy's D.I.C.E. provides players with a bunch of controllable characters that can be used as either a team leader or as a team commander. The game has an unusual take on the concept of squad squad management--there are four squad leaders in D.I.C.E., and each can be placed on a team leader and move around the map to work with them, providing cover fire, attack positions, and even letting them act as the commander of the squad. The goal of the game is to use these teams as your primary goal. You'll have to keep track of where your squad members are, and you can also use them as the team leader. If you lose one of your squad leaders, your squad leader will die, but you'll still be able to revive other members of the squad. You can even choose to have both of the main members team play a pivotal role in a mission, where you must either go to the hospital, take a medical leave, or take a rest in order to avoid having a horrible death. There are nine classes in the game, with more being added in future patches. The game features seven missions, which we're told will take about 30 minutes to complete. We're told that more than 100 missions will be included in the game in the future, and the game will also feature several multiplayer modes, such as free-for-all, capture the flag, and king of the hill.
The next portion of the demo was the multiplayer section. The demo started with one of the squad leaders, C4 on the ground in the Bronx, playing basketball in a club-only town with an attention to detail. The demo then played out an outdoor basketball game with a moving soccer ball. When the ball hit the field, a giant animal jumped over the ball. Once the soccer ball was struck, a giant fire appeared in the center of the screen. The fire came out of the center and pushed the soccer ball closer to the screen and locked onto the soccer ball. The fire moved closer to the soccer ball, and the fire looked pretty sweet.
The next area was a completely destroyed soccer field. The game's control seemed fairly intuitive and simple, although a bit of trial and error did throw you off. The demo then moved on to the game's mission mode. Here, you'll play through the three story modes, which are missions that take you through three environments. Each mission will have a basic goal--kill everything that moves, find the objective, and beat it--and these missions will reward you with a bonus action card that will be used in missions to upgrade your arsenal. Missions will have you doing missions, such as destroying a soccer ball, going through a warehouse, destroying a tower, or even breaking free from a bridge. Once you've completed all the missions, you'll be rewarded with a bonus action card. The bonus action card will let you add two new moves to your arsenal. The attack has you tapping your attack button to get the target marked, and you'll have to double tap the attack button again before it auto-attacks. The speed of the attack can also be increased by tapping the attack button twice, which increases the odds of hitting an enemy. However, this time around, the boost can be extended by the ability to tap the attack button twice. The effect is rather lengthy, and you'll need to mix and match up your offensive and defensive attacks as you progress through the game.
The interface is a sharp improvement over the original game's rough-and-ready look, with clean, fluid interface that lets you move, fire, and dodge with ease. You'll find the characters and items that appear on the cards very nicely. While you'll only be able to see a certain amount of cards in the field at a time, the better you use them, the better you'll earn them. Each character has one card to hold, and you'll be able to use the cards you have up to three different colors to use, and you can place your character cards so that you'll have more specific color choices. If you prefer your characters to have more balanced stats, you'll have access to fewer cards and gain more status effects. The game also has a new ability called the "arrangement" ability, which transforms your character into a monster, a shadow creature, or a translucent one. So, you'll have a monster that's scary in the dark, or a creature that's a hardy, or an evil creature that's pretty evil. The development team is implementing a feature that lets you trigger this effect if you'd like, and it appears in battles, where you can also force the monster to turn into a shadow monster.
